So the last time I build a PC over really overclocked it was 10 years ago.

This was the time when you could transform an AMD Opteron 1.8ghz into a 2.8ghz beast on stock voltage with air. I also had an Radeon 9600gt that I flashed the bios of to turn into a 9800gtx. Basically I turned £100 or so parts into what was worth £400 parts. Is there anything like this out there today (buy budget and tweak to beastly performance)?

I'm looking the build a new system for a friend, around the £300 mark using a BitFenix prodigy case. I know this is a real n00b thing to say but I'd love it to match or beat the performance of an xbox360 or ps3.

So far I was looking into the AMD 5800k that has reasonable integrated graphics, possibly cross-firing it at a later date to get great bang for his buck.... But that's are far as I've got because I've been out of the game for a while.

I'd really appreciate a quick lowdown of where the industry is right now and a possible build... I'm reading ddr5 when I was around when ddr2 broke through....

Thanks in advance guys and girls.

So a cheap combination is around £400. For people who are looking for similar. Haven't got any replies so I guess either the components I'm talking about in the OP don't exist or members here aren't quite as knowledgeable as I first though.

Or you might want to wait more than an a little over an hour at a time when most people are at work for replies :O
