It's been a while since I've done anything to my rig other than whacking a Thermalright cooler on my cpu that's so big it required me to dremel my case (doh!). I've known for a while that I'm almost ready for an upgrade (this one's almost 2 years old now) but after playing Crysis tonight I think sooner rather than later would be a good idea. Before people start saying it's a buggy game etc, I know it is. It ran like a dog on mine, fps was fairly smooth at 1440x900 on high but the textures looked rubbish and I wasn't all that impressed BUT if it's a sign of games to come then I'm going to need more power *cue Tim Taylor grunts*

Here's what I'm thinking at the moment -

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM

OcUK Value IP35 Pro Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (if/when it comes in stock)

OcUK GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - OEM

OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series

Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU

OcUK Value L2442W 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black

I'll probably whack Vista on there too as I'm quite impressed with it on the gf's laptop even though it does run a bit slower than xp.

Not sure how the gtx will cope running at 1920x1200 so I'm considering grabbing the rest and coping with my 7900gto until the 9*00 series comes out (hopefully) early next year.

How's it look? *crosses fingers*

get retail Q6600 for £2 more if you think the longer warranty and possible higher re-sale price is worth £2

the rest looks good to me

The new 8800 GTS is a much better choice for a graphics card. All the performance of a GTX but a third less money.

Is there a CPU cooler in there that I just didn't see?

i just thought he was going to use his thermalright cooler, i think we need to know what model it is so we know if it will fit or not.

to billy the impaler, look at what gibbo has done to the OCUK 8800GTX's price then make the approprite corrections, however i agree with you if he doesnt buy before next wenesday or before OCUK runs out of stock

Ahh, I see. That makes it difficult. Between the two I think I'd take the GTS purely because if its lower power consumption. They're just about equal in terms of rendering performance. The memory quantity won't make much of a difference at that resolution.

It's a Ultra-120A, currently butcherised to fit on a 939 board and sporting a 140mm fan but I can reverse the operation to put it on another board :D

One more thing that I'm unsure about is how quietly do the 88's run? I remember when I had 2 78gt's and it wasn't pleasant... not even a little bit... My current rig is almost silent so I'd like to keep it like that if possible! ;)

Wicked quiet. They're quite impressive in terms of noise. That's why you don't see many aftermarket coolers made specifically for the GTX. :)

That's what I like to hear! I was amazed by the GTO the first time I fired it up, as well as the first time I started playing Oblivion with it, when they say it's silent they really do mean it.

Does anyone know anything else about the OCUK p35 yet? It'd be nice to know if it clocks well, though sporting an Overclockers badge you'd hope so...

And Vista 64 so I can use all of the 4Gb RAM, yes or no?

Cheers guys
