Right, doing a couple of death runs again... Why not, its bloody cold isnt it?

Its a good excuse cos the PCs in the attic are gettign a serious bttering now.

Ok, here are the contenders:-

NF7S + XP1700 - I have already hit 3Ghz on this little bitch and she even managed a CPUZ Validation.

Neo2 + Winchester 3200 - Another one for 3Ghz

As these are my slowest and least used PCs I am seeing how far I can push them.

PSU on both are Magna 600w job... Less than a tenner and they are surprisingly good considering.

RAM is a single stick of Corsair TwinX 4400 in each.

The XP17 does not do high FSBs, Im extremely lucky to go over 255 but does an 18x so thats what Im going on... Its currently sat at 15x211 at 1.9v and the temps are a nice 54c and cooled with an SLK700 and YSTech with 2x120MM case fans

The A64 is sat at 10x320 RAM @ 3v and CPU @ 1.45+20%

Both prime for 15 minutes but they both fail to SuperPI.

Anyway, been messing with other systems too while I can for a kick.

The DS3 & P4 had hit a top end of 4.7 and its been running steady at 4.3 due to temps... Thats now back to up 4.7 and its only idling at 40c so thats going to do a run to 5Ghz if I feel naughty.

The Opteron has finally made it to 2.7 which has been a sore point for me, as I usually have to run it a 2.48 ( 9x275 ) but this has been purely because the RAM seemed to just stick at 275FSB and no more, I think its just been me and not the system thats stopped it there.

The Newcastle 3000 - This is my one and only 754 system ,and its in my one and only DFI too, its been running at 2.4 for some time now, and thats now sitting pretty at 2.5 but its only its first run above 2.4 so not risking it just yet.

I also have another NF7S and thats got the XP2500 thats been to 2.9 and so I will be taking that for a drive later on too, to see if I can actually hit that all-ellusive 3.0Ghz with it that I managed fairly easily on the XP17.

I need to see what BIOS its on first though... Im sure its an Abit one?

LOL yup, the attic has been converted into a computer room.

Freezing in winter, burning in summer.

In fact, I have a sleepign bag in there for when it gets too cold, and during summer, even at night, I have to walk around starkers - not a pretty sight I can tell you!

Summer can be a bit too much for it actually... The Barton2500 system's alarm goes off at 65c and it shuts down at 70... Well the Mobo bleeps for about 10-15 seconds and then it powers down... Thats how bad it can get, and yet right now Im clocking the hell out of it and its only just going over 50c - one extreme to the other.

The A64 isnt as bad, as the CPU is a much cooler CPU and easier to keep semi-stable... Plus better cases for better air flow help too!

I am really tempted to go for the 650i based motherboard, whats your opinions of it? Main reason being the Async RAM/FSB speeds as thats what limits me atm.

Good luck with the overclocking, you do realise your 1700xp (at 211x15) is only 60mhz away from the world record? :)

For the money I think it's amazing, the Async ram/fsb and the ability to run 1T as well is great.

Only downside to it is the cooling, nothing on the southbridge and a pretty rubbish passive heatsink on the northbridge.

I know its extreme, but Im all out to hit it... I would love to and if it means losing a system to get it, then so be it...

I dont want to lose the system, of course I dont.

But if I get speeds I can normally only dream of, and most of all, get the proof for the rest of us, then so be it.

Besides, in theory, if oyu can keep the temps down low enough, then that much volts wont dammage it as much as youd think... Volts dont kill CPUs as much as the temps do ( He says with complete ignorance )

The C2D I think is no longer for me such a beast.
You are pretty much guaranteed to get ridiculous clocks out of them.
However, 3.5 is definitely a respectable ammount of ludicrousy for sure.

I took mine to 3.4 but it was so unstable that it was useless... Even checking Emails would push it over the edge, so thats a future project for sure for me, but while its this cold, I just got to do a suicide run... I just gotta!

Im running a Vantec Copper NB job... I use these on most of my systems as I find them fantastic for the price... The South is cooled with a basic sink, and the whole system is using Deltas and YSTech, 4-front, 2-rear, 6-sideand this is pug-ugly and useless for real use, but thats not what Im in for with that PC, and it keeps the system stoney-cold

If it's still cold when I come down to your's (it's the UK, it will be!), we'll see what we can push out of the 1700... I'll bring the Sonic Tower down (Fit's on Socket A), and some Delta's... and a decent bloody PSU!


XP1700 Air WR? Very Possibly... just make sure you have Notepad with your name & the date on it, and CPU-z in the screenshot as well.

That XP17 record was set by MrRoadster of XtremeSystems.... on LN2/Dry ice/Phase cooling (can't remember which, but it was exotic)... break it on air, well... nuff said really

Seriously mate... The sooner the better. We wont put the central on all day just in case... The Attic is floating at 8c to 10c during the day, and night is colder... Welsh weather eh? Nice clocking weather insit boyyo!

If you want piccies of those rigs, I'll be down at FatRakoons with a camera (35mm SLR or Digital, You choose...) in a few days, and I'll gladly host them on my server just to prove you wrong. can post Raw unedited pics just incase you cry foul-play... Sound ok to you? Any other proof you want? If I can provide it with piccies, please tell me... 'cos apart from annoying people, I also love proving people wrong... :D

Just bear in mind that FatRakoon own's a PC shop mate... no names as i'll get a holiday, but it kinda makes sense that if this is his hobby, and he has access to as many bit's as he want's.... need I go further?
 
My thoughts on C2D v x2 and even Single core stands every bit as strong as the day I first saw with my own eyes.

The Intel is faster... Far, far faster.

However, when you are running as massive number of apps, while both the AMD and intel do indeed slow down more and more, the Intel slows down a lot more than the AMD does... End result is that the AMD ca nstill function fairly well, while the Intel will struggle.

The 18 PCs is not quite true.

I have 13 that are good PCs and a few more that are just older K6 / P2 / Cyrix systems.

I only actually have 10 that are fully setup, due to lack of space.

OR dont you beleive me on the PCs? Check out my homepage - the pics are crappy and old and the site is going through a change around, but plenty of info is there.
