Well over Christmas I ordered my Conroe E6600 and my Abit AW9D-Max board and its finally arrived and installed and working :D

I'm just letting it work at standard clock for a little while until some cancer tasks have finished (saves wasting all the time that the CPU has worked for ;) ) and then its onto reinstalling Windows and testing her out

Wish me luck guys, I'm new at this Intel thing!!

Many thanks for the replies :)

I run Boinc from the World Grid Computing as it does Cancer research.

As my Nan died of cancer I thought it was something that made the most of the CPU's I use and anyone that joins up with me against it.
Its a background program and doesnt do anything much to the performance that I know of. It can use both cores (if you use a dual core) and makes the most of when your not using the CPU or makes of what use it can when your playing games etc.. Very clever in my eyes :)

I'm not overclocking it just yet, just running a few standard tests first and making sure things are alright... My CPU temp seems a little high to me for idle at 42C which worries me kinda...

Any suggestions on what heatsink to buy??

I'm pleased!! New cooler and 3.6Ghz here I come!!

Well guys I hope this is a good thing :D

I'm gonna back it off because of the temps, the retail heatsink just isnt man enough for this but not to worry :)
I doubt its stable enough to run everything, but its running the cancer program I use, so I think its doing darn well at the moment :D

My aim is clear, new heatsink and 3.6Ghz and I'm well pleased!! 50% overclock, thank you very much!!

I have the Geil Ultra low latency stuff, in a 2Gb pack. Its really great memory and I think it was well worth me buying!! I had it before it nearly doubled in price so I think I was one of the lucky ones :)

I think its still got a bit left in it mind ;)

It's not even running at it's rated speed (400MHz) so you might see a performance improvement with your background tasks if you could tighten the timings a bit.

Whats the rating speed gonna be? I thought it was gonna be going over its rated speed at the settings I'm currently at but it just keeps working!!

I'm using these settings currently:

FSB - 360
Multi - 9
N/B Strap - PSB1066
DRAM Spec - By SPD (4:5)
Est DRAM Clock - 450 (DDR2 900)

CPU - 1.400
DDR2 - 2.1
MCH & PCIe 1.5v - 1.75

Been playing around this evening, here's what I've managed so far...

Everything is on stock retail cooling and lets just say I'm well pleased!! :D

Comments and opinions welcome :)

I didnt run any stress testing software because of the temps I was getting. It did manage to pass a 32M Pi test, so I was very pleased with that.

It seemed stable enough to run the few tests I have put to it...

I think I can tighten my memory timings as well, but I'm unsure what my memory is meant to be able to give me?? I've got the Geil PC6400 2Gb Ultra Low Latency stuff... What speeds should I be able to see from it? Dont Intel Quad pump the FSB? So when its set to 9x401 in the bios its only 200.5 for the memory?? Is that right?

Not quite - the RAM runs off a multiplier/divider from the CPU - In your last CPUz screenie you can see that the RAM is currently set to run 20% faster than the CPU (4:5). If you set it to 1:1 you could possibly tighten the timings a bit, but I think the extra speed is probably going to give more performance benefit.

But whatever speed you're running it at, it's a lovely overclock on both processor and RAM.

Well this was with a newer bios and I've managed to use the 1333 setting for the CPU which lowered the memory to 5:4 I think (swapped them around so its more like 1:1) but I'm wondering if leaving the ram timed by SPD is gonna be more benifical to me as I might be able to gain more speed from the CPU?

The volts I was running was 1.525vcore as 1.5v would lock the machine. It seems to be working perfectly otherwise at that speed.

I've a slight problem now in that I turn the system on and its got error 21 on the LCD on the board? Its trying to detect a floppy drive A media but its not actually doing anything, any advice?

I'm using a standard retail heatsink, so I've got to upgrade if I want to run 3.61Ghz on it...

Yep that`s the cooler, lapping is easy to do as the base of the tower is not the best, just needs a few hours of your time and some sandpaper :)

Well that sounds good to me :) What sort of sand paper would I need to buy to do the lapping? Is there any destructions on how to do it properly? I've never done it before..

I've just noticed that your from the West Mids Clone.. My fiance lives near yourself :D

She's just outside of Wolverhampton, in Coven. I travel up there every other weekend to see her :)

If you ever want to pop over I'm sure we could arrange something :) Maybe I could buy the heatsink and have your help whilst I'm doing it :D Or is that being real cheeky!!

Just putting together my AM2 rig again now :( My Abit board is coming up with a error code of 21 each time I try to re-flash the bios so I think its not well :(

You could just get me to do the lapping and then just sit there drinking the tea or coffee and just say how to do it :D

Comparing the retail Intel cooler to the Tuniq Tower without the lapping, how much would it knock down the temperatures? Would the lapping make a lot of difference?

All the lapping does is fix the only flaw in a perfect product IMO. I lapped mine as I am like that is all. If you are going for 3.6Ghz etc and 1.5V or over then I would say lapping should be done, as long as your skills and patience are up to the job.

I have no idea about lapping but I'm told that there is a 'how to do' on the forum somewhere? Or could I pay someone on here to do it for me??

Eveyone will have an opinion but tbh 3.6 is a good speed for the cpu. Whether u run 1:1 @ 800Mhz with tight RAM timings or 5/4 @ 1000Mhz with looser RAM timings will depend on your individual benchmark results. Superpi will indicate which is faster for you but in real world Apps and games you'll see sod all difference. Go for the settings that gives you greatest stability.

Temps are always the issue. At 3.6 you're near the max for that cpu. As long as you're below 70c running stress tests like Orthos you'll be ok. In 3D Apps it'll be more like 45c-50c under load. Try http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/ for 3D stress testing. This is more like the temps you'll see in day to day running.

I dont think I would run the CPU at 3.6Ghz unless the cooler for CPU would keep it cool and say under 55C on a full load..

I think if anything, 3.4Ghz would be more than enough for everyday use as you say, I wouldnt notice a damn thing in games or anything, unless I was using a FPS counter or something.

I suppose I would need all the speed I could get with a 8800GTX graphics card as they are a beast... Wouldnt say no to one mind.. But would I NEED to have water cooling to use it?

I must admit, I'm a little confused as to what to do when I want to upgrade my X1900 XT... The X1950 XTX arent much over a £150 now but they dont offer a huge performance increase... Not like coming from a 7800 + AGP card to the X1900 XT...

What would you say about a second hand 7950 GX2 card?? Would that make much difference?

And whats your Zalman 9700 like for cooling your E6600? I'm on the look out for a CPU cooler for mine, the retail heatsink just isnt enough past 3.2Ghz for me...

Would the Zalman 9700 fit my Abit AW9D-Max board? I was very impressed with my Zalman 9500 over my retail heatsink on my AM2 rig. At 2.75Ghz (1.55vcore I think) it knocked the temps down 18C when under a full load... Impressed as hell I was!! Managed to hit 2.9Ghz and be stable with that heatsink, shame the board wouldnt ever boot up first time tho.... :(

I'm also using a Coolermaster Stacker (810 model, but not for long!!) as I was hoping to put the AM2 rig in the 810 and buy a 830 and use that for the Conroe rig :D I assume I'd have plently of room for that?
What model stacker do you have? IF you have the 830 model, do you put the 4 fans in front of the motherboard at all??

What would you call a good price on the 7950 GX2 card? Would my OC Z 520W Mod Stream handle a 8800GTX ok? I was looking at the BFG model I think, although I'm sure others will come out in time. Kinda looking forward to seeing what ATI's latest offering will be able to do...

I'll leave buying the graphics card, I'm sure the X1900 XT will manage for me for a little while longer yet.. Nearly sped up twice as much from upgrading from my overclocked AM2 rig!!

Many thanks for the help BTW :)

I just notice that most of the guys on this forum are from the West Mids!! That's good news considering I'm not so far from Wolverhampton!! Anyone fancy helping me lap the Tuiq Tower or telling me I shouldnt buy a Zalman 9700 heatsink??

I am as I live here, but my fiance lives in Coven, Wolverhampton :)

I'm driving up to see her next week and I cant wait to get back in my car!! Its been awaiting parts for a few weeks (due to Christmas and New Year etc) but never mind :)

I think with the cooler I'm gonna try the Zalman 9700.. As I'm gonna try and buy it as I've had to RMA my motherboard and CPU. When flashing the bios crashed and I cant do nothing with it. It posts fine, but its stuck trying to read the floppy drive. Thats the last time I'll disable that!! :D
