It's Hotz in the Jungle

It's ridiculous.

If I buy some hardware, I should be able to do whatever I want with it, by either smashing it to pieces or changing whats inside those chips.

Sony can always protect their online services as it's server side. But to say what I can and can't do with the hardware is a **** take. When I buy something it's my property.

Hacker Geohot flees to South America

This has suddenly become a bit ludicrous. George Hotz, the guy being sued by Sony for releasing the PS3 Security Key, has fled to South America. That really doesn't seem like the actions of an innocent person.

Hotz has also claimed he never accessed the PSN. Sony found proof he has. I don't think he can keep running for long.

He's not innocent, but Sony still shouldn't be able to get away with all this considering it's the same thing with iPhone jailbreaking pretty much but apparently that's legal for some reason.

Don't see the hate though, yeah bit of a tool but so what? Doesn't change the fact it's a pretty ridiculous legal situation.

OffT - Why are you so hostile towards other members? :\

OnT - Yeah Sony are chasing a leprachaun in terms of legality to be honest but it's started now and no party wants to lose.

If it allows or encourages piracy, I'd say they're well within the rights to disallow it.

Wait what, Apple don't allow it or endorse it in any way.

It's the same principle, the US court deemed it legal, so why is this any different?

It's not. Moving on.

Ahh yeah my apologies, it still breaks Apple's EULA, I just assumed with there being a legal exemption Apple might have changed their policy. My bad.

This is Sonys responsibility to keep it locked up. Protect your product YES, but to tell people they can't mess with their own property is ludicrous. This needs to be straightened out, hopefully if Geohot wins the case.

Piracy is Sony's fault from their own incompetence. In this day and age, probably 70% of a games full potential comes from online play. This is still the case.

You can Pirate a game but you can't enjoy the full online capabilities ( IF Sony implement it right ).

I love this opinion whenever it crops up. It's so deluded it's hilarious.

But that piece of legislation only affords those rights to mobile devices AFAIK, no doubt this case will clarify other pieces of electronics (be interesting if passed what that will/will not cover) if any...

Watch out - he'll be over to burn down your loom soon...

It's not actually, you agree to licensing these things out to you. You don't actually own a lot of the property you think you do.

I bought a PS3, I own it, I can do whatever I want with it. I didn't agree to rent it from Sony, I bought it, and anything I "agreed to" was after the purchase.

That's nonsense though, by that logic, windows should be disallowed because of how it essentially "allows" piracy of PC games. Should be ban knives because people can hurt other people with them, while ignoring the useful aspects of them?
