Its just AMD CPU's that idle high right?

Hey guys,

As I was enquiring the other day regarding my GPU, it got me thinking on my temps on my 5900X..that when doing basic tasks, music, edge, steam, mail etc..im averaging around high 40's and low 50's degrees..and under "idle" its only dropping my cpu to low 40's..

Am I correct in saying that compared to Intel, the idle temps are bit higher?

reason i ask, is my temps are great under load (well, game load, not synthetic benchmarks) the temps are not much higher, not that they are dangerous or loud etc.. just was curious.

im only running the Wraith Prism cooler (because I love it) so mabye thats a small factor?

If you put a better cooler on it that will make a big difference. I’ve got a noctua D15s and mine idles about 30c. In Starfield it’s about 63c.

the thing is, in game it gives good temps (put a limit on the CPU) and average mid 60s degrees..and I love the WP cooler, I know its not the best but for its size does a fair job tbh..

I think a lot of it will be because of the cooler - i.e. it's a large lump of copper with a fan that blows downwards - it can carry a lot of heat away from the cpu package, but because of the downwards fan it doesn't get rid of that heat as efficiently as most tower coolers - resulting in a certain amount of heat just "soaking" in place

but even with the higher temps at "idle" that wouldn't damage the CPU in anyway would it?

What is your memory speed/ infinity fabric speed? I think if you are at 3800 or above the io power draw jumps up a fair bit and that doesn't clock down at idle so your temps will always be that bit higher.

memory speed not that high tbh mate. its 64gb kit at 3200MHz.

My 5800X would idle (doing nothing) at 30ºC. This 7600 which I haven't ran curve optimiser on or set power limits will idle 35-40ºC (but I am still working out my fan and pump curves).

My7950X idles at ~35C, I'm using ECO 65W so that may drop’s it a bit, but the cooler (AF 360 AIO) fans are set low(~650rpm). For me, Increasing the RAM from 4800 to 5600 bumps the idle power draw up ~10W so that will have a small impact.

yeah, im using ECO 65W too, that brought my game temps right down (also helped my GPU), and i haven't really noticed much of a performance hit..

I love my 65w 7600 chip. 65w FTW! Compared to my 8 core 5800x. Before I ran curve optimiser, going slightly ott sorry haha, but, it was hitting 72°c in cinebench. Now, curve optimiser has set -50 on all cores, I'm boosting 33Mhz higher (5,133Mhz) and the temp is sitting at 55°c! Amazing! My multi core score is also higher than a 5800x, 837 vs 824.

EDIT. Just a quick snap to show I'm not making it up lol.

When im not gaming or anything intensive i use this..

Set Balanced in Power Plans first.. my 5800X3D clocks at 3025Mhz all cores with 'Best Energy Savings' while browsing, Twitch, YT etc but still boost higher for more intensive stuff, i switch to 'Better Performance' when needing more power for longer periods like gaming.

Idle temps stay in the low 30's with Best Energy.

Sometimes the stock voltage is quite high. Remember the 3900x using an offset of -0.1V and temperature was much better, and stable. Not sure the 5000 series behaves the same way, but overall, your numbers are safe and well within specs.

My 5800x3d with a noctua nh-d15 runs about 35-40c when idle and 60-75 depending on the game.

The above is inside a fractal r5 with is not the best case for air cooling.

Personally id download pbo2 and have a go at adjusting the power curves, knocked off 10c from my chip at load and 5c at idle.
