When I crunched for the team (just before BOINC was released, so only 4 WUs) I didnt do it for any other reason than to win. I am pretty sure a lot of people got into competing and forgot about waht it was actually about. No chasing aliens here.

That's exactly how it is. I looked for aliens for OcUK, contributing about 6000 WUs. I switched over to folding and never looked back. You don't have to enjoy particle physics, little green men, computational microbiology, or anything else to enjoy DC. I dare anyone to join an OcUK DC team, particularly the shiny and stylish Folding@Home project. I bet a tall glass of stout that you get addicted like the rest of us.
