Hi guys,

I’m nearly on the verge of a permanent ‘break-up’ with Norton/Symantec :)

My annual subscription runs out in less than 2 months?

We were together for over 6 years; since my divorce from McAfee

I’ve simply had enough of the Norton range – I have been a regular user of both Internet Security and Systemworks, have seen a steady deterioration of both the quality and reliability of these products? It’s also becoming more of a resource-hog with each subsequent release!

I’ve always recommended NIS to everyone I know, but In the last 6 months or so, the complaints I’ve been getting regarding this product has got out of hand???

I’ve slowly been weaning my self of off NSW with the help of various apps. from recommendations in these forums; Tune Up 2006, Adaware, Sypbot to name a few?

But now it’s crunch time

I need a new Virus scanner; hopefully incorporating some kind of email scanning? Recommendations please…

I’ll be requiring a software firewall too? What’s good out there atm?

I have my usual Norton budget (£60+) to play with?

Thanks for your help!

SW.

Look for the NOD32 thread just above/below this thead.

For around 50 notes of the realm you get 3 years subscription with NOD32. I believe much cheaper than Norton.

As for a software firewall, I used to go with Sygate, but I believe they are no longer around. Next choice after that would probably be ZoneAlarm. Not sure how good it is now, but seemed OK about 2 years ago when I last used it.

I have just changed from Norton myself. I am now using Nod32 and Zone alarm Pro firewall, both are great. Zone alarm will not let you fart without you giving it permission, once you get used to this it is great :)

i think we should start looking for payouts from Eset after all the good words/reviews we have been posting about NOD32 :p

I have always rated Mcafee and recomend it to people over norton. And as always they provide good service. there 2006 suit is amazing :)

Welcome to AVG club! :D

AVG Free edition is good, it can even scan my e-mail in/out and best of all, you won't notice it running background.

Firewall? You can even get AVG version with built-in Firewall - cost $48.50 for 2 years! I have found it good enough if not better than Zonealarm.

I know the man that uses the alias SiriusB and I can agree with him on recommeding NOD32. I also use ZoneAlarm Pro and once you set it up it is brilliant. I wouldn't go near Sygate now Symantec have taken control of that.

So I vote NOD32 and ZA Pro. How do I get my 30% commission?:p

AVG Free.

Don't see the point in paying for a virus scanner with this little baby.

I find that AVG has a few problems with detection and if you view reviews then you'll see the statistics.

And I used to have AVG as my AV protection but then I went to uni and got a license for Sophos. As soon as I finished installing and I ran a scan it found viruses (5 of them). Ok its not a huge amount, but i'm vigilent.

I bought Ca eTrust Ez Antivirus can have it on its own or as a suite - although the firewall looks like Zonealarm.

Fairly cheap I paid $29 for 2 years, appears to be very light on the system if you just use the Antivirus part.

Behind Firewall/Router so just use Windows SP2 firewall.
