For most previews, fifteen hours of play time is about thirteen hours too long. With LOTRO, we've barely scratched the surface. Yet we have to admit that if first impressions are right, it's shaping up to be the first true WoW-beater we've played. Not because it radically changes the WoW formula, but because it uses the exact same formula. Only this time around the formula has been improved, and is now used in a setting that most of us can relate to.

LOTRO is getting some good previews from around the world right now :)

Saw a limited edition on another website with lifetime subscription going for £180

Worth it for die hard MMORPG fans I guess.

To me that sounds like when the gas companies offered 2 year fixed price rates before christmas, happy in the knowledge that they were reducing their prices soon and getting people fixed on higher rates.

I'm sure its sensible to some people but i thought the game was very poor and wouldn't spend my cash to play thats for sure.

Didn't like it myself, a few friends of mine tried very hard to like the beta they played but couldn't bring themselfs to give it better than average reviews.

It was pretty bland and generic, IGN have been swayed by EA's marketting dollars.

It's being published by Midway in the states and Codemasters in Europe. EA have nothing to do with it ;)

wow was dire anyway

In your opinion :p

I'm sure the 8 million+ subscribers would disagree.

I got the mail for the LOTRO beta but my PC has a blue screen whilst downloading, now if i try and get it it makes in 700mb's into the first file and then has a small message on the download bar telling me 'server busy' and then it resets the download and it's starts all over again  ....so i gave up trying.

its a wow beater because it follows the wow formula...only LOTRO looks prettier, from what ive heard from here and some mates is that whilst it looks great, its fairly basic in its game play.

WoW has been a boost and a curse to the MMO genre, its brought loads of people to it...and its destroyed MMOs by companies making them "accessible" and as such, bland and generic...thank you WoW hehe

all of this is my opinion, people like what people like...i dont like wow, others do, i dont like wow for destroying swg, and i dont like wow for creating a generic formula that companies follow as a "guaranteed success" plan

I love WOW, it provides a good range of content for all players, the 5 hour a week brigade can wander through it happily enough, and enjoy it and actually accomplish something in those precious 5 hours.

The 30+ hour a week brigade can raid, pvp etc, plenty to do

If you want something 'oldskool' or 'hardcore' then go to Vanguard, but personally I think thats dire.

I will be keeping an eye on Warhammer Online and LOTRO, maybe they can tempt me away from WOW, im more than willing to give them a try before I form any opinion, but so far nothing has come close in my opinion in catering for my particular level of play, being the 20-30 hours a week i would say.

I wonder how many of them are long term subscribers, I also wonder how many are active.

but theres no denying its the most popular mmorpg at the moment, it's just a flawed game :)

so just like WoW which has always been

Go son and grind A until you get 56 of B

Ah good here's the followup go grind C until you get 100 of D

Small A at level 1 becomes large A and Giant A but it's still A.

u dont like mmo's :D then i guess

This game isn't an anything beater, unfortunately.

I've been rather unimpressed with it the few times I've played.

Nothing so far has come close to the original EverQuest. Don't bother playing it today tho, it's not the same game.

EQ - Kunark - Velious. The MMORPG tour-de-force :)

Thats just like saying a FPS is just "run shoot, run shoot" or a racing game is just driving around in circles. Luckily most of us know there is more to it than that and they are fun to play.

Your oversimplifing it a bit :)

How about:

The number of quests where you must kill, gather or loot a certain number of items from a certain number of creatures is quite high. The number of true quests - where the player has to interrogate an NPC, travel across continents, learn a bit of lore, solve a puzzle, infiltrate an enemy stronghold, etc, are woefully low.

The oversimplification is by the devs themselves. They seem to be afraid of implementing any quest that a three-year-old could not understand and solve.
