Right, I'm toying with the idea of building a new rig.

Will be carrying some stuff over from current rig, just after some opinions about wether I really should and about what I'm planning.

Built nearly 3 years ago I currently have:

- Asus Rampage Formula Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.83GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor
- GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GB24GB8500C5DC)
- PowerColor HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI Dual Mini DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card
- Samsung SpinPoint F1 640GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD642JJ)
- Coolermaster Real Power 850w Modular Power Supply
- LG GGC-H20L Blu-Ray Reader & HD-DVD ROM Serial ATA Drive - Retail
- Antec 900 Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black

I'm planning on reusing;

- Antec 900 Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black
- LG GGC-H20L Blu-Ray Reader & HD-DVD ROM Serial ATA Drive - Retail
- Coolermaster Real Power 850w Modular Power Supply
- Samsung SpinPoint F1 640GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD642JJ)
- PowerColor HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI Dual Mini DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card

I'm thinking of this:

- Asus Rampage III Extreme Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
- Intel Core i7 960 3.20Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366)
- Corsair 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 2000MHz Unbuffered, 9-10-9-27, XMS3 with Classic Heat Spreader
- Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD20EARX)

- I'll see how this 6870 performs when I install it, it's finally the new card I've bought to replace my broken 4870X2 in my current rig, haven't tried it yet, only got delivered yesterday. So will run that in the new rig first, then likely go for something like a 6990 when the price drops.

My questions to you are:

1) i7 1366? Worth it now, or should I opt for i7 1155, or indeed even i5 1155?
2) My 850W PSU should be decent enough still, shouldn't it?
3) Worth getting an SSD to run the O/S and just leaving the the 640GB out, and get a 2TB for data, or indeed run both the 640GB and 2TB as data drives.
4) Cooling? I have the Antec 900 case, which has 4 120mm fans and a 200mm top fan. I wan't to upgrade these, namely for quieter ones ideally. Any thoughts?
5) CPU cooling? I have a Noctua which is alright, obviously can't carry it over, but I never overclocked, so was never really a concern. With this new rig, worth going watercooled? If so what kit can you recommend? If not, what air CPU cooler would be good?

I never overclocked my current computer, but I'm planning on overclocking this new one. I don't have a budget per say, cheaper is good, but I may aswell spend a fair wedge as this will be serving me for a few years to come, more than my current one (3 years). My old rig components left, will eventually be made into a media PC for the living room.

Probably won't be buying the stuff from OCUK due to my ongoing feud with them so, you can recommend any products, my google-fu will find them from that point.

Gracias.

Sandybridge is what you want,

Newer
Faster,
Cheaper,
Cooler,
Less wattage.

i5 2500K vs a i7 950(closest I can select) - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=100

There any advantage running i5 instead of i7? Or is it just the larger price of the i7 doesn't warrant the performance difference from i5?

The i7 2600K has Hyperthreading and a little more L3 cache and 100MHz faster core speed, none of these things are that useful for gaming. If you say you want to also do media encoding/video editing etc, then the i7 2600K will be useful.

Sandybridge reasons above.

Yes

A SSD is nice, a Crucial M4 64GB is perfect- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-008-CR

Scythe gentle typhoons are nice and quiet and shift good air too

Do you have a socket 1156 bracket? if not there are plenty of good coolers for around £25 such as a Gelid tranquillo or hyper212 from Coolermaster
