Hay all My currant pc is

Mainbord : Asus P9X79 Pro
CPU : i7 3820 (sandy bridge=E) (socket 2011) (overclockers over clocked 10%)
CPU cooler : OCUK h2Flo single fan cooler
RAM : Corsair Vengeance 16Gb DDR3 1600MHz
Storage : 1 TB Sata HDD
GPU : XFX 6870 1GB no over clock
PSU : OCZ ZS 750W
Monitor : Aoc 2260 1680x1050 @ 75Hz

Right firstly I think I need to be tuned into Sanity FM, because after doing overtime since Christmas I've not managed to save anything for a new GPU (the fun of having kids ;) ) which is now 3 years old and the product itself is 5 years and gets very hot and cannot run DA:I (amongst others) at max.

My current bright idea is Asus GTX 980Ti DC3 OC Strix and a new monitor either a 1080p @ 144Hz or a 4K ( its a gaming PC does little web browsing and some youtube nothing else) and i have just noticed that all the new socket 2011 boards have DDR4 memory. Also I have a SSD coming my way so that's not needed

I am looking for some advice; is the 980Ti the best way to go for longevity or is a 980 or a 970 better as i can sli them later to boost performance?

Should I go for a 1080p @144Hz monitor (or 1444p @144Hz - like the ROG swift I have heard very good and very bad reviews of it and it is also very expensive) or are 4K monitors good for gaming again looking forward.

Finally should I consider replacing the mainboard for a model that has DDR4 or is that unnessary right now. The budget for this I would like to keep low as with 3 little ones money goes to other things first.

If budget is tight you'd be able to comfortably get away with saving the RAM, HDD and PSU from your current build as they'll perform perfectly fine. What's your budget for all this?

Keep your motherboard as the new ones that uses DDR4 are not compatible with your cpu. Socket 2011 is different to 2011-3. A 980ti which would be a massive upgrade from your 6870 along with a new monitor looks good to me. I wouldn't be paying £150 more than the £509 ones for the Strix though. One of the cheap ones will do the job well enough. Overclock the cpu if you haven't already done so too.

That answers the motherboard question.

I think the right way to go is upgrading the GPU and monitor. The budget for this will be negociatable with my (long suffering wife :D )

so it will be based on what will last the longest, with a passable second GPU and new PSU to cope with 2. and then whats better for gaming in the monitor stakes 1080p 1440p or 4k

Depends on what you prefer, I'd love to play on 1440p or 4k resolution but not having 120Hz refresh rate is a deal breaker for me. Having got used to 144Hz I got completely thrown off by 60Hz due to the huge difference in frames. If you don't play many shooters, 1440 / 4k will be fine for you as 60Hz won't hurt you.

You can get a 4K G-sync (Acer Predator) for less than a 1440p G-sync (ROG Swift/Acer Predator).

A 980 ti will run 4K pretty well.
