iTunes - Distortion on tracks

Hello,

The majority of my music comes from CDs, I buy them and rip them myself and pop them on the PC/music device and go on quite happily. Occasionally something rare comes up that I want that I can't get on CD (it's usually an odd track or a theme etc) and so I turn to iTunes.

Twice now I have downloaded a track that doesn't sound like it's been recorded properly (distortion on high volume segments etc).

In one case the track sounded like it was recorded off vinyl with cracks and pops and the like, plus distortion on high volume sections.

In the other there is just distortion on the bassy areas.

Upon inspecting the waveforms they are not clipping but show signs of being clipped at some point and then the volume lowered for the version on iTunes. So although there is nothing wrong with the iTunes file, it's been "damaged" at some point in the process.

Is this something I can complain about and get resolved, or is it just the way it is? And then do I direct my concern to the studio or iTunes?

Regards
Paul
