Anyone come across this before? i hear the sound to show windows has picked it up but then itunes freezes, once i unplug it then it starts to work again fine? i have to do this upto 10-15 times before itunes picks it up and works...

Any help?

Mine does this about 1 time in 5. If I leave it for an age it settles down. I sometimes have to task manager, shut down Itunes and then start again.

Did you at one time Jailbreak your iPhone?

I never had an issue with mine (back when I was on windows) but when I jailbroke it I started having similar issues to yours with iTunes.

I think it was down to a conflicting driver, maybe have a look at what happens in your Device Manager when you connect the iPhone.

Regularly happens with iPhone and iPad on my setup.
Usually works fine, but may need to unplug it a couple times every now and then. Never could pin down what may be causing it, but this is on 2 "clean" devices that have never been jailbroken.
Suspect some other Windows driver/device manager issue is the most likely explanation, as it's not something I see with fresh Windows installs, only ones that have been up and running for a while.

Had this problem for about a year, I ended up reinstalling windows when I got an SSD and it's been fine ever since so it's definitely a software thing.

I installed the latest update for my iPod Touch yesterday and am experiencing exactly the same issue. After connecting my Touch, iTunes hangs for about 5 mins then doesn't show the Touch on the Left-hand side bar.

I can connect it to my Netbook though and it shows up straight-away.
I'm running 32-bit Win7 on my Netbook and 64-bit Win7 on my desktop so that may be something to do with it. :(

Edit: After looking through several posts on this issue on the Apple forums, I found the following workaround:
"Run iTunes.exe in Compatibility mode - specifically XP service pack 2".
This worked for me and I my Touch now appears in iTunes on my 64-bit Win7 desktop.

I'm going to think twice about applying any future updates to iTunes from now on though...

My one doesn't freeze as such, but something is using a lot of CPU causing my pc very slow. The only was to fix it is to reboot the PC. Very annoying

Im actually having the exact same issue.

I did a fresh install of Windows 7 x64, without any updates and a minimum amount of drivers and installed iTunes. My iPhone 4 synced perfectly (tested a few times).

As soon as I installed an Antivirus, iTunes hangs soon as I connect my iPhone and un freezes soon as its removed. Updated windows fully (with SP1) and the problem doesn't change.

Ive tested with Nod32, Kaspersky, Microsoft Security Essentials and Trend Micro Titanium (just the AV versions) and all but trend caused the issue. But Trend hardly has any options at all, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't do as much as the others.

When I had Nod32 installed, disabling it did not help, it actually had to be uninstalled to resolve the issue.

Thats too many AV programs that use to work fine with iTunes to suddenly all at the same time be causing the same issue, so it needs to be a problem on Apples end.

Like most people, setting compatibility mode (even Windows 7 compatibility mode after installing SP1) partly resolves it, but its still a bit of a crapshoot. Don't know why compatibility mode helps, since windows 7 without any updates freezes when an AV is installed, so why would Win7 compatibility mode help?

Anyone still having this issue?

Yeah, i formated and still get the same problem, been running without a AV for a couple of weeks but the problem is still there.

Mine did this (not sure if it still does) but I find plugging the device in and then waking it up by pressing the Home button on the device makes it appear in iTunes.
