Is there a way to use one set of music files, but have 2 or 3 machines using iTunes using the files? Each machine would also have an iPod syncing with it.
Would something like Time Capsule do that or would that just backup info?

Through regular iTunes sharing (DAAP) other machines can connect and listen to your music library. However, you wouldn't be able to sync an iPod through that. You could set up a Samba or AFP share and map all the machines to it. That would probably work.

You could..

Just turn on Library sharing in the preferences so that each machine uses the same set of files, but that would mean leaving the master machine on to share the files.

As for syncing multiple iPods.. you can create playlists for each, or just hold down Alt (maybe ctrl) when starting iTunes.. this will let you select a library to use.

Use a different library per machine, or iPod.. your choice.

But turning on library sharing wont help me sync an ipod from another machine.

I already sync 3 ipods on the one machine no problem. The problem i have is i have 70gb of files i would like to use 3 machines to sync their own ipods with, without needing a copy.
My setup just now is i have a PC that 2 iPods and an iPhone sync with. But i would rather have all the files in one location (such as the PC) and use my MBP to sync the iphone and an ipod with the files and a macbook to sync its own ipod with the files. But i don't want to have to keep 3 copies of the files.

Couldn't you create aliases on the machines that point to the central location, and sync them like that.

That way iTunes can access the files just like they were on the machine.

That's what i was wondering if anyone has had experience before i go messing around first :)
I was wondering if a Time Capsule would allow me to put all the music on there and then use the other machines to connect to it.

I think the problem with having a central store, then the iTunes on each machine pointing to that for the files+ the library.xml is multiple accesses of the library file, which could quite easyily become corrupt.

I belive a proper iTunes server setup, perhaps Linux based, even in a VM, would do whats required.
As it allows the library/playlists/etc; to be stored in a central location, updated/viewed/played by multiple clients.
Essentially allowing the iPod/s to be synced from any machines connected to the server.

You can put your library on the Time Capsule, and share it to the multiple PC/Macs no worries.

Can you sync ipods etc that way too? If so i think i will end up single lol

Well, I'm not sure.. it's the same as streaming the library off one Mac, except the Time Capsule (NAS) it running all the time.

I wouldn't think you could sync an iPod from it though, as it streams.

You'd be fine if the computer you were streaming to had a copy of the files (which defeats the Time Capsule-sharing-idea!)

Brain meltdown..
