I'd like to have my iTunes running off of a network drive (NAS) rather than all being stored on the machine's local disc. I can create a brand new library for this (and then import the lossless files in), I don't need to keep any playlists or playcounts etc.
From what I've read there's two ways:
Realistically, what's the difference? Does is matter which way I do it? I'm gussing the whole iTunes library idea is better, rather than just having the media files on the NAS and keeping databases on the local machine?
Also, in the future, when iTunes is opened will it already need the network drive to have been mounted (I could auto mount it at boot) and it will break if the network drive isn't mounted? Or is it clever enough to know "My library is stored on the network drive, lets try mounting it before giving an error message"?
From what I've read there's two ways:
- Move the iTunes Media folder as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
- Create a whole new iTunes libary including Library.itl and Library.xml by Option-Clicking iTunes when starting.
