Does anyone know if the following setup is possible?

  • iTunes installed on desktop PC with music library.
  • iTunes installed on HTPC. No songs in library, instead it uses sharing features to play songs from desktop PC library.
  • iTunes Remote used to control playback on HTPC, even though library is on desktop PC.

I finally pulled my finger out and tried this. The answer is, yes!

To get it working I did the following:

  • Enabled home sharing on both computers (in iTunes).
  • Opened the iTunes Remote app and went to my HTPC library (which was empty), went to the "More" screen (where you can find all the different content types for the library) and selected "Shared".
  • Selected the library from my desktop PC.

I could then browse by Genre, Artist, Playlist etc. all of the content on my desktop PC, but it plays out of my HTPC.
