Hi All,

Can anybody help me? I would like to split my iTunes library so that my music is on my MB internal drive, but my movies are on my external drive. I've found a few ways to do this, but I want to know if there is a way that means the movies can still be synced with my iTouch.

I found a clever way using Reference Movies, but these would not upload the full movie to my iTouch?

Any suggestions? Been searching for ages!

Cheers,
Matt

Yes you can do this, I have the same setup for my iphone. Music lives on my Macbook pro, movies and tv shows on by external disk drive attached to my airport.

I did not actually split my library. What I do is everytime I want to import a Movie or TV show, I switch off the "copy to library" option in the itune preferneces. I then put the file on my external drive and import into itunes. Itunes then sets up a link to the original file. Works well for me. I then have one library that my ipod and iphone sees fine. Also syncs perfrectly to my Apple TV.

Probably shouldn't have used 'split' as that really isnt what i wanted.

Your method seems fine - can you tick the box again after you've imported the movie (i like to keep my music in the itunes folder)

Thanks
Matt

I've not tried it, but could you not create a couple of symbolic links within the Music folder for 'Movies' and 'TV Shows' and point them to wherever you keep the video files?

Create aliases to the files in the iTunes/iTunes Music folder on your MacBook that link to the real files on the external drive.

Then, when the drive is attached they will be accessible, but when it is not they aren't

You're going the long way around.

Just right-click on the files on your external drive, select "make alias" and drag those aliases in to the "iTunes Music" folder on your MacBook/Mini/MacBook Pro/iMac/Mac Pro

No messing with iTunes preferences, and it can be done easily.

Works like a dream. Cheers EVH
