iTunes not waking up my Apple TV

I used to be able to open up iTunes on the Mac, play a song and select the output device to be my Apple TV and it would come out of standby and start playing. Not sure if it was the iTunes update or the recent OS update, but this no longer works which is pretty annoying. I can't seem to find any settings to enable it again, any ideas?

I have found issues with iOS 8 messing up ATV and the AirPlay function.
