itunes problem when importing

hi all i have a problem when importing MP3s from hard disk,when i import a MP3 from one of my hard drives it loads the file into the library and then syncs fine to my ipod touch.
When i then try to play the MP3 from the library it tells me that the file cannot be loacted as the external hard drive it was imported from is turned off, when the drive is turned on the MP3 will play.
i dont have this problem when importing CDS only when importing MP3s off a hard disk? can anyone help me on this please.

When importing it doesnt actually move the files, it just creates shortcuts in itunes. You hdd must be turned on for the songs to play, cd's are different as they are ripped to your main hdd so itunes can access them

Look in Preferences > Advanced > General and there's an option to copy files in to the iTunes directory when adding things to your library, rather than just pointing to their original location.
