Right, just bought my first Ipod and started transferring some music to my Ipod - great.

Put on 3 CDs worth and the MB taken up is silly..

What is the default file type that should be used when converting songs from CD to Ipod ? Mine is Mp3 ?

Average length songs are maybe 3 or 4 MB or so, if it's using more space then it ought then you might have it set to the lossless format, look in the iTunes options.

Is the lossless format not as good as MP3 ?

sounds like you have it set to lossless.

to change you want:

Edit -> view preferences -> advanced tab -> importing tab

then you can choose what type of file to convert your cds to, you want either mp3 or aac.

Lossless files offer the best quality, as its identical to cd quality, trade off being the larger file sizes and therefore the fact you can't fit as many songs onto the ipod, and they decrease the battery life as playing them requires the harddrive to be accessed more.

Personally lossless is great for archiving your music question, but i stick mainly to high bitrate aac/mp3 on my ipod.

Its set to MP3 at the mo..
