Hey guys, I have a iPod Nano (newest) on the way from Apple,

I am hosting a iTunes via my Qnap NAS, I am wondering can I sync to the iPod from the sever? Ideally I'd like to sync via my PC or my Mac.

Or would I have to map iTunes on the PC and the Mac to the SMB network location?

With any device, the only way to sync natively and wirelessly (ie. using the built in iOS features, not simply dropping files into an app) is to use iTunes Wi-Fi Sync. That computer would need to be running iTunes.

In your case, with a nano, your only option would be to point iTunes to the library stored on the SMB network share then use your computer. Effectively, all you'd be doing is moving the library to another location; you wouldn't actually be changing how you sync at all.

Also worth mentioning that if you store an iTunes or iPhoto library on a network share, you'll need to have the share mounted, otherwise it'll just bring up the prompt asking you to select a library. The way around this is to create an application in Automator that will automatically mount the shares and open the app for you, so not a big deal and would take a minute to do at most.

Alternatively, you can simply run an Automator application that mounts the network shares at login (same thing, just without opening the app afterwards).

You won't need an automator rule to reconnect to a share at login, just drag the server connection into your Login Items in the account preferences.

If you decide to run your iTunes from a network share then decide which machine you are going to use to add music, playlists etc. and point iTunes at the shared location. With your other machine use the iTunes sharing feature of the NAS, don't have two iTunes clients on different platforms trying to use the same library.

Only reason I suggested Automator is because, based on my previous experiences, putting shares into the Login Items opens up their windows on login, and ticking the hide button didn't work (and that would merely hide them).

Not sure if this has changed, but I doubt it.
