Hi

Not sure if this is the right section but given the answer needs people to consider VM's let's give it a go.

I have an ipod classic which sits in my car as my primary source of entertainment. It'll have a weekly sync with iTunes for both new music but more commonly podcasts. Previously iTunes has sat on my desktop PC for no other reason than I needed a USB port to sync.

I've since upgraded from windows 8 to windows 10 which currently just has office and a few games installed which is my daily stuff and it's primary function rather than software which i think is a little bloated.

So....i need to think about syncing my ipod for some new albums and the previous weeks podcasts. How do I do this?

  1. My desktop PC
  2. My Server (It's a hyperv VM so USB jiggery Pokery required?)
  3. My N40L Microserver with a windows OS installed. (Is mostly off so would power this up specifically to sync)
  4. I'm missing the obvious which would be too....

How do you sync your ipods?

N40L, they take hardly any power so wouldn't be the end of the world if powered on. As it will hold your itunes library you can home share to all other devices in the house including apple TV's etc as well so would be quite handy.

You could even push the boat out a bit and install plex server to add some more "value" to having it on 24x7

Hi Steve, I already have plex server on one of my VM servers (along with sab and sonar) so no extra value to be had there.

I only set plex up today though (after amazons fire tv sale yesterday) so not sure if a 24x7 iTunes server would benefit me over just a media folder shared 24x7 but again any comments would be appreciated.

The only negative I can see with the N40 route is the boot up time + log in time + load iTunes time. Seems wasteful to leave it on given the sporadic nature of syncing my ipod but hey, nobody wants to wait for stuff these days do they.

Can't you just spin up a VM to house your itunes server then sync your itunes/ipod on your local machine via home sharing? I'm sure I read that iTunes can support this.

Hi Steve

I feel this is the opposite of what I want to achieve. Having the above surely means having iTunes on both a VM and a physical?

What I want I 'less' iTunes and if having iTunes at all, which type of install would give the least impact?

Essentially you would have a copy of itunes on both but the actual library as such would be commanded by the vm machine, the local machine would purely be a slave thu skeeping the install to a minimum. Obviously this would be dependant on where the data is kept also as you haven't yet mentioned this.

This still feels like the going in the wrong direction with two iTunes installs.

I think i'll just stick it on the N40l then once a week spin it up for iTunes updates/ipod syncing and add backup duties which don't currently exist.
