iTunes Stuttering

I can't remember when it started but iTunes has recently started stuttering during music playback. It never used to do it until just after updating to version 9. Its incredibly annoying! I updated my sound card drivers last week which seemed to fix it but then yesterday it started doing it again without making any changes to anything! I've searched online for a fix but nothing seems to work.

System spec:

Windows vista 64 premium
[email protected]
8gb ram
asus p5k premium
creative X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series
Sapphire 3870

Its definitely a software problem as the music stutters in different places each time so can't be corrupt files. I've set quicktime audio preferences to wave out instead of direct sound which still does nothing.

Help would be appreciated, people on the apple forums are useless.

I have W7 64 and a Auzentech XFI Prelude with latest drivers and also get this problem, I don't know as it has anything to do with Itunes, maybe more of a Alchemy problem, more and more people suffering this problem.

The fact it is all media players and now video files too I would be looking at drivers or a hardware problem.

Copy some of the media files to another computer and see if they work properly. If they don't your files are corrupt which is a sign of a dodgy HDD.

If they play just fine it is drivers or a broken sound card.

I've just been testing the different players. The same file stutters in itunes, quicktime and vlc but it doesn't in WMP which is even more confusing.

If the files were corrupt then it would skip in the same places each time which it isn't. If it were the sound card then it would be the same in wmp. This leaves drivers. My sound card driver is the latest. If it were the sound card drivers then surely it should have stuttered since I first installed the card 2 years ago but its only just started.

What other drivers might be causing the problem?

Seems odd only one media player has no problems. Try removing ALL media players from your computer, and check in Programs and Features for any codec packs - uninstall them.

Now reinstall iTunes and/or VLC and see what happens.

There was a fix for this sort of issue a while ago - reinstalling the DVD and controllers in the Device Manager. Give that a shot.

WMP is definitely stuttering now during video playback too as well as music. Restarting temporarily solves the problem but after a while it starts again. Getting really annoyed with it. I thought the problem had stopped but its started again this week meaning I can no longer enjoy music on itunes or watch films on the computer without it stuttering.

I haven't tried the last suggestion regarding reinstalling dvd and controllers. Wasn't sure exactly how to do that.

Hmm... I haven't updated my bios since last June and I don't think the problem has been going on that long... what motherboard do you have?

I had an asus Crosshair II formula.

Does your soundcard use Win7 drivers? If so, go to device manager > uninstall device then restart. It should the try and reinstall the drivers by itself.

This fixed a problem I was having with my soundcard. :)

I'm on vista still, I just updated the lastest driver off creative's website last week to see if that'd solve it but it didn't.
