iTunes volume up...Firefox volume muted

If you're using Vista/W7 click the sound icon in the system tray and hit "Mixer".

Then mute firefox :)

Apps like Audio Hijack Pro and Wiretap Studio are geared towards recording, but are probably a heavyweight way to wangle what you're after.

The per-application control in Win Vista onwards is nice, GeForce!
