itunes woes

Hi,

Can someone please advise me how I go about backing up all files on my IPOD? so that there is a copy on my PC incase my IPOD crashes?

also, I am currently using Itunes v7.1.1.5..

I keep getting an update msg when I open Itunes...should I update? both my ipod and my itunes version? Its just that previously people I heard did not update due to bugs...

Please help

I currently have 37g worth of music / videos...does that mean I have to have 37g free on my pc to back it all up?
