hi all, im wanting to put together a small itx gaming rig and/or buy a pre-made one. I have a budget of around £300 and I want the rig to be able to play fallout 3 at a reasonable resolution (nothing spesh, framerate more important to me) so what would be the best thing to look at?

ive been looking at the asrock ion 330 thus far but i dont know how much power it has?

cheers.

Ion is severly underpowered for fallout 3, as can be seen in this review by anantech here.

So you probably need to look for an ITX board with PCI-E slot, but then most cases won't be able to accomodate a half-decent GFX. Something like the Silverstone Sugo can probably fit a short length 4830/4850/4770 with single slot cooler but these cards are hard to find.

A shuttle would probably be best for a small form factor gaming setup but a decent one is not cheap.

On a £300 budget its going to be virtually impossible, ive specced this up for you but it wont be great at gaming until you buy a graphics card for it, im assuming it will have to be at a lter date :

Even a shuttle is going to be pushing it maybe have a look for Shuttle XPC SG31G2.

well actually, I don't need a CPU, I have an old Core 2 Duo laying around not doing anything that would be good enough to run stuff. So take that off. Don't need onboard GFX then so I should go for a shuttle instead and buy a second gcard? In actual fact I have a X800XL 256mb that I could put it in as well? Would that run stuff OK or is it just too old? Don't mind spending a bit on a good GFX card in all honesty.

Would be nice if there were ITX boards that ran fast processors, but without the onboard GPU - especially if they're providing a PCI-e x16 slot.

Give it a month or two and hopefully we'll see more ITX boards from the big suppliers.

Actually just had a look at a review of the silverstone case and it supports dual slot gfx so assuming you need everything bar the cpu:

the sapphire 4770 is out of stock atm though. It's still 20 quid over but it's worth it.

No you don't need the onboard gfx so you can just turn it off. Just had a look on OC and a decent shuttle that comes with a meaty psu will set you back 300+ so might as well stick with ITX.

No the X800XL is outdated even for the less demanding games, plus if memory serves it's an AGP card so it's not compatible anyway.

Assuming the OP isn't planning to overclock and assuming he has it, the stock CPU cooler would do the job, he also has enough posts for free postage for forum members :) that's knocked almost £20 off and isn't far off the £400 budget :D
