I just watched the MVG video on the ITX-Llama so thought it was worth a thread. Its basically a new mini-ITX board with lower power SOC CPU and RAM with AGP, audio, SATA and some old USB and PS2 ports as well. Ideal for vintage gaming running Windows 98 or DOS natively without emulation or using old hardware. Full details below:

  • Adjustable processor speed for everything from Wing Commander to Quake 3.
    • Cache can be disabled.
    • Speed can be set between 100 to 500 MHz
    • Uses the Vortex86EX System on Module
    • The SOM provides performance equivalence up to a Pentium 233MHz MMX
  • 128MB of RAM on the Vortex module.
  • AGP Slot perfect for a 3DFX Voodoo3
  • SD to IDE card adapter on the board for fast storage complete with hard drive click simulator that can be disabled.
  • Crystal sound chip with both a small sized WAV header or 40-pin Rasberry PI based MIDI playback.
    • The crystal chip provides SB Pro 2, Adlib and WSS features
  • Optional true Yamaha OPL3 module.
  • Full Ethernet support.
  • Hayes compatible modem emulator that works over Wi-Fi
  • Both modern and period accurate rear ports.
  • DOS and Windows 98 Compatible.

Around £250 which is going to be more expensive than buying used retro parts but ideal if you want something new and reliable which can also run in a tiny case out the way.

Thoughts?

This seems like an evolution of the VIA EPIA board I had. That was a VIA C3 800MHz with bad internal AGP graphics and standard built in sound, but it had a PCI slot for either graphics or sound. I used it with an ESS Solo Something and an ATI 9250 for either DOS or early windows gaming. I am not sure I would spend $250 having scratched that itch for about £20 (they're more expensive now it seems!)

Edit the 233MHz ballpark of that SOM is around the same area as the 800MHz C3 tbh

It's a neat device and I want it, but not sure I'd want to spend that much on it! It's great to see people make these type of things though, and as the video says, as time goes on finding/maintaining original hardware will get more and more difficult.

I can only echo what's been put here already. It looks super cool and I'd love to have a play with one - but not for that price.
