Hi All,

I just got a VIA A2000 itx machine and have installed it with windows 7 and shared some data.

I at first tried connecting it to my tplink unmanaged gigabit switch but it would not connect, so now I have resorted to plugging it into my bt home hub.

I can access the files in the share but when I copy them I only get about 900kbps.

Does anyone know why this is so slow?

Also any idea why it may not work through my tplink switch?

Thanks

Hi Mate,

I have updated the drivers to the latest ones, tried with a different cable, tested the cables.

I installed the via network controller software and can see it running at 10mbps link speed... cannot understand why, surely the homehub 3 has 100mb hub...*goes to google*

homehub is only a gig on one port the others are just labelled ethernet.

Definitely not a cable problem, tried with multiple cables and tested the cables with a cable tester.

Thanks
James

The weird thing is that the applet reports that its connected with 10mbps...

That leads me to think that if it is set to 10mbps as default then the cheap gigabit switch may not be backwards compatible with 10mbps

check the driver for setting it to full duplex mode etc. perhaps the switch is dropping down for some reason...

Hi,

I have tried all of the available options for this, none work with even the home hub unless I enable auto-negotiation...

FREENAS here I come!

Will do,

Im thinking freenas 8 wont be any good as it requires 4gb of ram and I only have 2gb with a single slot.

FreeNAS 7 seems to support more features like bittorrent client and firefly server.

are there any other good reasons to go with 8 over 7 in my case?

Thanks
James

I have a VIA a2000 itx machine with 2gb RAM, 2tb green hard drive and a 1GB compact flash card.

Thanks

Ah sorry just checked that out, so it's a barebones server. According to the spec it should be able to handle a Gigabit connection. Can you try connecting it directly to your PC and see what speed it negotiates or use a router instead of that switch? EDIT, what speed does the homehub negotiate at?

EDIT2 - Hmm have you tried checking reviews to see what network speeds others have got with that machine? Try removing the drivers completely and reinstalling. Are you installing the driver that VIA supplied or going to the manufacturer direct?

EDIT3 - It seems you're not the only one having issues, FreeNas users here have reported a similar issue but using FreeNAS. This could indeed be a driver issue!

ran it on freenas using the live CD, up until the final stage of boot the nic had activity lights, as soon as it booted the lights went out.

I suspect its my TP-Link gigabit switch, when plugging it into the gigabit socket on my homehub I get gigabit speeds but with there being only one gigabit port this is absolutely pointless.

Anyone have any idea why it wont even connect to my TP link switch?

Also any small cheap gigabit switches about?

Maybe the TP-Link doesn't support Auto-MDIX and a cable somewhere is crossed over?

Other than that, can't really see why the TP-Link wouldn't be happy with the otherwise fully functional setup.

It apparently supports auto-MDIX but it wont play ball at all, have had no issues with other bits of kit using the same ports and the same cables...

Well I managed to get embedded freenas 7 on a CF card, just copying files off my 2tb wdgreen so I can format it and mount it in the Artigo...
