I've noticed since the weekend that the Red Warning Shield thinngy in my task bar has appeared, when I hover or click it tells me that "Automatic Updates are switched off!".

When I go into the Security center and check again it tells me their off, but if I open the automatic updates tool it shows as being switched on and scheduled for 3am each morning?!?!?..

The only thing I've done recently is install IE8 Beta 2... and a few microsoft updates!.. would one of these cause this glitch?, is it something I should worry about!?!...

I'm gonna run Avast, Spybot and Adaware tonight to see what's hanging around...

*edit* sorry... I'm on XP Professional with SP3

Its nothing to worry about, you can manually update your system as and when you feel like it. Just google 'microsoft update'.

That little icon is just Window's way to scream at you for not doing something the way it likes- it won't affect anything.
