Spent a few minutes today playing on a Wii.

These are just my first impressions:

Size - it's bloody teeny!
The 3 dvd case size thing holds up. It was sat next to a PS3 which made it look even smaller. The PS3 is a brick. It's huge and not that pretty.

Controller works very well.
It's good to hold and all the buttons are easily accessable. I can see why some people are finding it slippery though.

Graphics - this was being played on a 32" plasma screen and looked pretty good. Admittadly - next to the PS3 it was a lot more cartoony and was nowhere near as good, but was definately better than I expected.

Some of the others I saw looked great. Zelda in particular looked superb.

Now...

Fun factor.

I spent 15 minutes laughing my arse off while playing it. Some of it was due to my mate being hopeless at Wii Tennis, but it was a great fun game.

I can see this taking off big time. Hopefully Ninty have got it right this time.

So glad I have a pre-order in.

Seen a photo of a demo pod at a shop in Cardiff so i may pop along to see if its playable... at least i can have a look at one though.
Think i am gonna wait till the black version comes out before making a purchase.

Most of use here have PCs so if we want games with fantastic graphics we could have them but on the same note we also want to have great family fun which the Wii can give. There's also games for the hardcore games which I'm guessing everyone here is. :D

The graphics dont bother me too much as I have the 360 for that. However, I honestly think they should steer away from releasing games like COD3 that are easily compared to other formats and stick to more individual titles where realism doenst matter.

Yeah... although I'm a great CoD fan, so I'm in 2 minds about this.

I see your point about the obvious comparisons with other formats, and agree with you. But the thought of playing a FPS with the Wiimote is just too good an opportunity to miss.

It's such a shame that there's no wifi in it, or at least multiplayer. I kinda hope that they'll release an update to offer this, but that's just wishful thinking on my part.

When I went to the demo at Birmingham the girl gave us each a controller and then took them back off us when we'd had our game. It was all roped off so you'd have been pretty obvious nicking it as you would have had to walk past her!

I think nintendo have done a really good job advertising the wii in public and on the TV (been a ton of advertisements on Tele lately) compared to the half hearted attempts in Europe in the past.......Of course we'll be shafted every step of the way from here on in but it's nice to be taken notice of at least once :p

how do they secure the controller ?? or is it handed to you and you have to give it back afterwards ?

In the US stores, people are having to hand in their ID which they will get back after using the console.
Nintendo didn't want to secure the Wii-mote to the pod for obvious reasons, however, i think they should have and just used a very long wire. Would make it much better to pick up and play!

Thats pretty much it as far as it went as well.

We were using the controllers from about 6 to 8 feet away and they worked very well.

gfx may not bother peoples too much now, but given the proliferation of HDTV's and the momentum they are developing, the "newcomers" to gaming drawn in by the WII are going to be wondering why their games look worse on their new HD TV.. etc

i pre-orderd the wii a few months back now , for me the Wii is a fun packed family sized Nintendo DS, but only me and the missues will be using it. I bought it just for the fun factor it reminds me of the n64 days. All i can say is bring it on :)

Nah, can't see it. A lot of people who are into HDTV, who are connecting their TVs to HD sources etc, will already be well aware that the Wii isn't HD. Let's face it, a lot of people with LCDs and Plasmas have already taken a step back by connecting their TVs to SD sources, where the picture quality is (usually) less than that of a decent CRT. They connect their PS2s with composite cables etc.

It'll only be when these people are using HD sources and are well up on it all (I know 1 person with Sky HD, but plenty with HDTVs) will the Wii's graphics come into play.

Non-newcomers will just say that the Wii isn't a patch graphically on PS3 or X360 - that's a given.
