Hi everyone,

Like a fool have been scammed, only to the tune of £30 so no real loss, but it's more the principle.

Background is that I was incessantly mithered by my oldest daughter for a Dyson Hair Wrap, that are exorbitantly expensive new, thus we started the search for a used but good model.

We came across the following (I hope the link works) :

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/6217016271665080/?ref=shops_pdp_share&_rdr

Stupidly paid a £30 deposit, with £100 agreed to pay on pick up.

Got a message late on last night that another party is interested and can we pay more by BACS to secure the item, clearly said no, and since then radio silence.

No reply at all to our query if the original deal is still on, and they are not even reading messages now.

Up to the point we were sending cash, the responses were almost instant, so clearly a scam, and I expect if my wallet was still open they'd be at my beck and call.

I've written off the cash, I'm reasonably savvy except for this one occasion, but it anyone can help trace the real person, or scam the scammer, all good.

Really appreciate any help, have seen some real good stuff from our OCUK community before, been here a long time although my post count isn't reflective of this.

Thank-you.

Yeah, £30 written off most certainly, I'm wondering if any peeps on here can trace the real person, not sure if this is possible, or if anyone is bored enough to lead them down the garden path.

£30 was the cost to teach you a valuable lesson. Trust no1.
.. You should have watched the X-Files.... Anyhow count yourself lucky it wasn't much more
You've probably got off lightly, some people would no doubt pay the whole amount up front.

Yeah deffo, I had my suspicions from the off.....should have trusted my senses.

The £30, I'm angered, but life experience.

Just had a quick read,

By the sounds of it, if you report all of this to the bank - you should probably get your money back.

How long it will take is anyone’s guess, but on second thoughts it might be worth telling them, as they do have processes in place to deal with this.

There’s certainly no harm in reporting it to them and trying,
Do this
See if anything comes of it
Little effort, might get your £30 back eventually, if so very little lost timewise
Report it online and go thru the details get a crime number

Cheers, did phone bank scam last night but they wouldn't entertain it due to timescale, will call them back to update.

If £30 gone, cheap lesson learnt, the bloody rascals.

£30 for experience is pretty cheap. You would have paid more than that for a "scam awareness" course!

Yup, fully agree, I'd just love to know the real identity behind the scam if there is a way to find out, certainly beyond my IT skills.

More so if I could report to the plod....but likely they are not even in the UK?, so fruitless.

Lots of people get ripped off on facebook.

I'd only do deals either on ebay or forums because you can see the reputation of the seller.

I'd see if you can flag it with the cops and bank though. Because they might have changed their profiles but I bet they are using the same bank details.

Yeah, I'm gonna ring bank back, not expecting the cash back but hey ho, my fault.

I'd never part with any consequential sums without knowing or seeing absolute trust, this was just a **** in the wind and my error.

Sort Code should give you the name of his bank. Give them a ring and let em know. They may lock his account out

Yeah I'll do this, I'm assuming these scrotes have burner accounts but no idea how they open them assuming they will do it loads.

For it to work in assuming any funds they have going into the account are moved out straight away.

The account i paid into was:

***Removed once I'd realised how daft I'm being***

Assume this will likely be dead now?

Can anyone find out who they are from this?

Probably way off so won't be specific but there is someone with a very close name to that in Oldham who has a lovely family who've made the news a couple of times for crime... so wouldn't surprise me if they were into a bit of scamming.

Anything more you can expand on, even if in a PM, I know a lot of people in Oldham (used to work there and got around a lot).

Clearly if dodgy I'm not gonna forfeit my safety.

You can but it will likely take a lot of work, ultimately observation posts can only get you so far, eventually to figure out the truth you need to start kidnapping people and begin interrogations.

Yeah no John Wick here, was more looking for an easy way to inform plod.

Didn't the name ring alarm bells? That wasn't the name of the seller on fb...

I'm a fool I admit, it's like falling for somebody selling a an RTX4090 for less than a £1k., the product in concern was a Dyson Air wrap that are around 500 quid new.

But I knew instantly once the request for more online cash came in......to be fair I was only up for sending the muppet a tenner to reserve it, but hey ho.

As prior, cheap lesson learnt.

Ok but you are posting the account number for what, for me to call my friend in Halifax to ask him to tell me the details of the account and then post those details?

Very naive of me, I'm more just venting to be honest, certainly would not expect anybody to compromise their integrity.

I've edited the post to get rid of the account details.

I've resorted to admitting the cash is lost, and luckily a small sum (not that I'd send any large sums without being absolutely sure).

On the off chance, how unlikely this may be, don't send any cash if you ever recognise that name.......on the basis they are likely prolific on Facebook and fronting the next 'in thing'.

But I fully admit I've been had, luckily in a very minor way.

I understand, venting is fine :)

This is why i pay by credit card, its not my problem then.

The start he explains his life which, is interesting, later he goes on to talk in terms of fraud, i.e. pay with credit card then its not your problem.

Good advice, and what I'd normally do......definitely had a lapse of concentration on this occasion (and as before exacerbated by my 12 year old daughter bending my ear, but no excuse on my part as the adult, full responsibility lies with me).

If anything it has been a cheap lesson learnt and will make me ever more wary online.
