I thought I’d get some cash together this month to fund the purchase of a 360. I've been reading up on them, waiting for the cash to gather.... and now I’m seriously close to getting one I’ve been really really really put off.

They seem like the biggest disaster since....I don't know what! I can't believe people are still going out and buying these machines when they're built like a load of cheap rubbish! I've had a PS2 for 5-6 years and it’s worked flawlessly. I had a PSX which other than needing to be turned on its side after 5 years of constant use, works perfectly!

The thing that bothering me is this red light thing. I can understand boxes being updated badly and the power cutting off but from what I've been reading it seems like 90% of the issues people are having with red lights are due to really really bad soldering points melting and a lack of cooling and paste on the overheating GPU........................ we're into the 2nd/3rd year of production are we not??

I wouldn't mind if it was the odd complaint, or because people had been modifying them but a massive number of boxes that are dying are fresh off the shelf?!?!?!??! Many people paid near £400 at launch, got 1 year warranty and now can't get their boxes fixed it’s beyond a joke!!!

Thing is, I’m itching to get one but I’m slowly starting to see sense. I'd love to wait for another revision but in true MS style I wonder whether that’s ever going to happen as they're making an absolute mint from repairing their defected products!!!

I've spent the night reading about people using heat guns to repair their dodgy consoles though, its not inspiration to go spending £300!!!!

Yip, 360's are fab - Im hardly off mine... never touched Pc gaming / ps2 / gamecube etc for yonks.

BUT the poor reliability is definitely not a myth.

My launch console (core sys) has been ripped apart and case modded used endless hours playing some quality titles and HD-DVD's, downloaded tonnes of demo's and videos and all without a glitch (touch wood)

Go on stick your little toe in the water and then just JUMP the waters just fine :D

Pesonally, I'm waiting tfor the 65nm(?) version, hopefully should be cooler and maybe more reliable. Not sure on release date though, could be Q2.

I get how you feel tbh im actually on me 3rd now i cant fault the replacement method though its superb 4 days return and free shipping.

But i dont like the fact that MS is not doing anything to fix the reliabilty of the console you only have to look at reports to see there is a problem. Saying that though maybe the 65nm will do something maybe it wont only time will tell.

But really dont let it put you off its a fantastic console and as long as it breaks within a year your entitled to replacement although id prefer 2 years warranty standard tbh.

When you say case modded have you added extra cooling etc?

No per say but i removed the upper shielding from the inside of the case and cut out the delta fan exits so the air could escape more easily. Added a window so i could see the innards as well.

I believe i have improved the cooling of the unit considerably and we all know that heat is bad m'kay :P

Can I have a look at some pics? Thing is I suppose I could get one now and then trash it once it died!

The Xbox 360 is a little over 14 months old.
I am wondering if the leadfree solder is causing them issues, it shouldn't be but it might be. It has caused a lot of grief in the electronics industry.
I'm not convinced about the lack of cooling paste - less is more with thermal paste.

I'd agree that the numbers seem excessively high. However I am not sure what the actual return rate on new product is, nobody seems to know. Certainly a lot of people report returning their 360, how many that is out of total sales I don't know.

My launch premium was £279. I don't think anyone paid more than that for the console.

How are they making money repairing them? Their returns procedure must be costing them a fortune.

mate, just get one. you have a years warranty on it. if it goes wrong replace it.

i've had mine over a year and it's fine, as are a lot of peoples. MS admitted to early machines having manufacturing problems. These have all been ironed out (from machines made in 2006), so I think you'll be fine.

Don't be put off by a small minority on a forum.

Many of the US customers have been asked to pay upwards of $150 to repair their boxes. I hadn't actually thought about the shipping backwards and fourth but they'll no doubt be more than covering their costs!!

I just don't know what to do. I really really want one, but I'm starting to think that its just a complete waste of £200, I was thinking of waiting for the 65nm version but i've been informed that its due in Q3 not any earlier :(

That's the thing, it seems like much more than a minority!

I've had mine since release day. It did the oblivion lockup thing when that was common, I exchanged it and it has been fine since.
I am actually thinking of getting a second one (for upstairs) so that I can actually get a go on it once ina while.
