Cant get the 1 month trial then unfortunately. It comes with every newly created account as said above.

Exactly. It's only a month free for new accounts. You'll have to create a new gamertag to get your free month.

Can't he use the redeem Account name option or whatever it's called ?
Maybe Recover Account name option, Summit like that.

thought you could create a new account three or four times getting a month free each time if all else fails

You get it when you sign up to xbox live. You have to create a new tag on the 360 to get the months live. The purchase fo a new console then recovering the tag will not give you a month free.

As has been said, if you're not particularly worried about gamerscore or achievements, then creating 4 new gamertags (one each month) will get you 4 months worth of Xbox Live gold for nowt. Only 4 months mind. That's the limit.
