Monts and months (probly years! ) ago, Ubuntu were giving away their OS free (for x64, x86 and PPC) so I though I'd get a copy (or two!...)

Anyhew I never got round to installing it (The wife kept complaining about me 'Faffing' with the Computer  )...

I've now dug out my old PC:

AMD K6II 500
128mb PC100
1x 20gb (WinXP)
1x 10gb (Empty) etc...

and at the weekend I had a play!...

It already had XP Pro on it (which I want to keep for now!) so I installed Unbutu on the secon HD for fun!...

Now the system struggles doing anything in XP but Unbutu Flys!... I'm now considdering wiping the entire system and having it as the only OS on there!... Then all I need is a NIC and I can connect it to my LAN and get on t'interweb with it (theres no modem!!)..

Anyone recommend any software (freebees) for me to play with to see if I can convert over to the other side (dark or light I dunno!! :D )

I'm looking for: Image software, Cad software, Video/CD/DVD authoring software!... the stuff I use most days in Window$...

Cheers.
Sim

Ubuntu has always been free.

Cad is a difficult one on Linux because most are commercial ventures, try QCad, PythonCAD, Varicad or SAGCad.

Image software is included, GIMP and so are some video editing and DVD authroing tools.

You are good to go. :)

Once you get Ubuntu on the Internet, you can access the live software repositories and download more-or-less any piece of software you feel you need.

Very easy to do.

I know but they were giving away loads of CD's (10 per person max I think) so you could pass em on and get people on linux who didn't want to download a Mahoosive ISO file... So I got: 5x x86, 4x x64 and 1x PPC... I've never done anything with em though! (till yesterday!)

I'll start 'Googling' (I know your not allowd to say that anymore) later for some decent software! Then I'll have a pla... Sorry Serious investigation of my limits in Linux :)

which version is it? if you ordered it a while ago there might be new one for you to upgrade to.

Try Sourceforge for lots of open source (read free!) software alternatives to download

Most of them are cross platform with some famous ones like Azureus so will work in windows and linux (and probably macs too)

Some good windows programs too if you care to look

Use synaptic to search for software. It's built in, right there in your menu under Add/Remove Programs. Click Advanced for even more options, it's in here that you can enable the universe/mulitiverse software repositries for maximum package selection.

As an aside it's not out on Linux yet.., but Google Sketch Up is a pretty damn slick 3d CAD type app give it a try. But it can only be a matter of time, as Google Earth is now available under Linux.
