The last time I backed up my data and reformated was one and a half years ago.
Since then, it was slow to start. Once it did start it was a powerful machine, but some demanding applications took longer to start up too.
I consider myself to have a powerful machine as well:
AMD Athlon 64 Winchester 3200
HIS x800xl
1024MB, 1GB GeIL RAM

Anyway, to the point. Today I did a backup and a clean reformat and bloody wow! All those demanding applications are working a bloody breeze!
I know the previous slow downs before the reformat wasn't due to spyware because i'm up to date when it comes to security, (AV, Firewall, Antispyware, Regcleaners, the works) and it traced nothing!

Moral of the story. Backup and reformat at least every six months :)

Edit: To add to that, i'm also very thoroughly impressed with IE7!

get all your programs as you want them, then on another pc, install acronis true image, create a bootable cd, then from that cd in your main pc make an image of the drive and keep it safe somewhere, now you dont need to format, you can simply restore the image every few months

also, www.nliteos.com

^lets you strip out the crap from xp, so its super slim and everything will be a lot faster again :) been using it for years
