I'm gonna be getting my Wii delivered either tomorrow or wednesday and I want to make sure I have everything I need before setting it up.

Wii console with Wii Sports - check
Extra Wiimote with nunchuck - check
Pink Wiimote cover thingy to really get the wife into it - check
Component cable - check
Old skool controller thingy - check
SD card - erm...well, how big a card will I need?
Is it possible to download soem games n stuff to play on the Wii (I assume that's wha the retro control pad thing is all about) if so then I also pressume that being as though there's no HDD they would need to be saved to the SD card!!! What kind of sized cards have you lot got and how much stuff are you filling them with?

Also - does the Wii play DVD's?

Wii doesn't play DVDs :(

And tbh, I haven't bought myself a memory card yet, will plan too when I run out of space so I wouldn't worry too much atm :)

Don't worry about SD card as 512MB is plenty enough. However, with SD card, you can download some VC games to it and bring it over to friend's house to play them on their Wii. Thats what manual says I think!

Are you sure, mate? I thought the VC games were tied to your machine, and that they can be re-downloaded for free on the same machine if you've had to delete them due to lack of space on your SD card. At least that's how I understood it.

Sorry, my mistake. I'm not sure where I got it from or maybe mistook for something else! :o

AFAIK, there is no need to buy an old skool controller, as i was told that you can use a gamecube controller, is this true?

Thanks for all your replies, just a few more questions and then I think I'm all set:-

How big are the VC games though?

Is it worth having the extra space as I might want to download quite a few?

Also, is there a maximum size SD which the console will take?

I'm not going to buy one of the official Wii SD cards as they seem a complete rip!

Cheers

Not entirely true - while the Gamecube controller will work on all NES/SNES/N64 Virtual Console titles it is not compatible with all Mega Drive/Genesis/TurboGrafx titles. AFAIK all currently released titles can use the GC controller but further down the line there may be some that are not.

Isnt their a Premium version of the wii with DVD playback planned?
Not that its a big feature now a days for most but im sure is usefull for kids bedrooms etc.

Joebob did you get an import, just that i have a friend is a bit of an old school NTSC nutter and he was dissapointed with the UK having 50HZ border virtual console titles wheras the USA models are full screen 60Hz...

He was really happy though when he got a USA machine and was finally able to fully enjoy Mario in 480p which the PAL N64 was never able to offer with it having a rather poo tv ouptut..
Although to be fair this guy is very fussy when it comes to his gaming..

Enjoy your gaming and look forward to your comments first hand experience with it...

DVD playback would be good as I am seriously considering getting another for work for staff to use to relive stress etc. If it has DVD playback then it would be a double bubble as I could put it through my books as a DVD player for training videos etc :)

No, I didn't get an import. I have never ever been into buying consoles on launch or even importing before and tbh the only reason I got the PS3 was because one of my staff is Japanese and his mum was coming over to visit him before xmas so he organised it - wouldn't have bothered otherwise (still wouldn't have bought a 360 though ;)). I bought it from fleabay but I'm getting a bit cheesed off as I'm still waiting for the balsted thing to arrive - I've got Zelda and an extra controller sitting here next to me too... Grrr!
