The past couple of days, my iMac has randomly decided to freeze whilst I'm just generally browsing online using Firefox and chatting on MSN and playing music from iTunes. The music would suddenly stop in iTunes, and then a few seconds later my Firefox would become unresponsive. MSN would freeze up then too.
I couldn't do a Force Quit at all, the only solution was to turn off the iMac by holding down the power button. This only happened once a day, if that.

Today however, the problem has happened about 4 times so far and it's really bugging me. I've reinstalled iTunes, downloading the most recent version, and that hasn't helped. I can't think of what the problem could be - have even downloaded the free version of Sophos and run a full scan but nothing shows up. I've done the usual verify/repair in Disk Utility too. Any suggestions would be terrific :)

You could try running the diagnostics? At the chime on startup hold down D might take a minute or so, it should load up the diagnostic tests which will test things like ram etc.

You could have a look in the console also to see if any software is going a bit screwy, just type console in spotlight.

Haven't tried this but will do. It's almost as if something is gradually taking up CPU resources until the computer just can't cope.

Is it actually freezing or is the cursor still responding/beach balling?

Both, completely unresponsive.

I don't use Transmission. I'm fairly sure it's iTunes related now as I haven't had it open for the past few hours and the iMac has been fine.

I've just run the diagnostics test and no errors were found. Haven't opened iTunes yet today and there's been no problems...

Trying to update my iPod, iTunes keeps giving pop up messages such as "xyz can't be copied to the iPod etc" and it's taking a while for the message to disappear once I click ok. Also my desktop icons have disappeared and my dock has gone missing. What the hell?!

I've just removed everything from my iTunes library and uninstalled it completely. Going to reinstall and create a new library, see if that helps.

HDD seems fine, run Disk Utility usuals and downloaded Onyx and that reported no problems.
I've just removed everything connected to iTunes, including library settings and artwork, adding everything to a new library and no problems as of yet...!

Ended up reformatting and reinstalling Snow Leopard, currently transferring everything back over and installing important stuff. Effort!

Yeh cheers, been away this weekend so haven't had much time to get everything installed but it seems ok now :)
