Right, evening people.

Now i've just got back from buying a Windows 7 disk, my OS at the moment is Vista x64 Home Premium but when I click upgrade it says "Checking Compatibility..." then it comes up with this -

The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc, or go online to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings.

32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 32-bit version of the Windows installation disc.

any idea's?

also, whats the difference between x64 and x86 is it worth going x86

cheers guys, help would be most appreciated.

Retail boxes of Win7 include 2 discs, 1 each for x86 and x64 - I don't know about OEM versions but I don't think an OEM version would run an upgrade anyway?

Go for the x64 version unless there's a specific reason not to :)

one is 32bit and the other 64bit, you may need to format the os partition before you do a fresh installation. even though it isn't hard make sure you back everything up and download all the drivers you will need before hand. store the drivers/old stuff on a different partition if you are confident enough to do it yourself.

what ?

Check the disk you are using is 64bit [it should say so]
Dont upgrade through Vista. Boot from the CD and do a proper install.

Thats a bit backwards, First one its says you cant do 64>32, Next one says you cant do 32>64. Unless it just all the problems it may be and doesnt actually pick the correct one for you.

Anyway, Forget an upgrade install, do a fresh install and confirm its 64 bit. You can live with 32 bit but there is no reason not to go for 64.
