not going into details of why

I need a new motherboard and cpu (mobo at least anyway)

my system is 6 years old , new motherboard time, so new cpu too ?

I might go new this time not second hand, so with that in mind, what cpu + mobo combo ?

if new mobo that takes ddr 4, then which ram as well

I don't want to sidestep or downgrade from my i7 940, I want to step it up a bit but keeping the price down as much as possible please

requirements =

4x sata 3 (but will need 6 ports minimum)
USB 3 (or is it 3.1 now?) for front and rear
want to keep my current gfx card for now, but will upgrade it in the future

also I have a question, whats the difference between haswell and devils canyon cpus?

thanks

Rough budget? Also what parts do you need your post isn't very clear.

You want CPU, Mobo and RAM. But what about a case, SSD, hard drive, power supply? Do you want to re-use any of it apart from the GFX card you mentioned?

id like to use as much as I can across to the new system if possible
I got hard drives/ssds, case, 780W PSU DDR3 RAM so hoping to use that as well as the gfx

im seriously skint at the moment, but I need a new computer mine isn't working anymore
but I can see the cpus are what £150 / £200 and motherboards about £150 ?

so lets says with a budget of £300 - £400 ? or is that too much or too little?

Here are 2 specs... Depending how tight you need to be on the budget.

Either X99 or Z170 your choice. Pros and cons to both chipsets at the minute.

Whilst your cooler, ssd's/hdd's, case and psu are fine to carry across. Your ram will work at its rated 1.65v in a Z97 board, (the new skylake Z107 platform is ddr4). But Z97 requires either 2 or 4 dimm's in a dual channel configuration. Your current 6gb is a triple channel kit which means you would be limited to x2 2gb sticks for dual channel operation. 8gb is pretty much the standard amount for gaming theese days.

ah ok, thanks

so as I have 3x 2Gb sticks, I will need to change it anyway?

Yep, 8gb would be grand on something like Z97 or Z107. On the latter, ddr4 is pretty similairly priced to current ddr3. Your soundcard will be fine too.

interesting

more inclined to go with the newer chipset ...

Z97 and 107 share the same mounting holes for coolers. Certain versions of the megahelims came with a bracket that features mounting holes for s775, 1366 and 115*. All mainstream intel chips since lynfield have matching socket holes. Ive used my current cooler on 1366, 1155 and now 1150. For some coolers there are certain extra parts that have to be purchased separately for use on the new X series 2011 socket motherboards.

ah I had problems with my i7 920 build, the memory banks on the motherboard were dying, still are because i'm using it until I get a replacement motherboard, which means new cpu from overclockers.

what problem are you getting?

here's my thread if you want a read

but funnily enough it seems to be working now just my ssd's are faulty

at least I think that's what it is

I can get it to detect my Samsung 840 evo but not my 850 evo..

been trying to secure erase it, but the secure erase program cant find the drive lol (the 840)

secure erase? is that done through your bios or in windows? you might need to add you 840 to windows using disk manager which is an admin tool in control manager.

I am doing it how SAMSUNG have told me to do it

they said to load up the magican software, goto secure erase, make a bootable cd and boot onto the cd and run it in dos basically and it doesn't find it
