I've joined the Crysis party late and need a bit of help with custom configs

Firstly, let me start by saying that i've used the search function and it looks like all the specific information on this is contained within the large, generic, crysis threads. I really don't want to go delving through these threads as i don't want to come across posts whilst searching that will ruin any surprises that the game has for me. So please forgive me for asking for information that is within these threads, but i don't want to spoil my gaming experience.

Anyway, on to the matter at hand. I've just bought and installed crysis and have enjoyed playing the first 30 minutes or so, however, from a quick read around here, it appears that to get the best balance of performance and eye candy i need to use custom configs. My system uses fairly commonplace hardware and is as follows;

quad core 6600 @ 3.4ghz
4gb mem (but using XP, so 3.2 accessible)
8800GTX running at Ultra speeds apart from memory that won't go past 972
dell 2007wfp running at 1680x1050 native resolution

The autodetect feature in crysis sets everything to high, but whilst the game is very playable, you can tell that the frame rate isn't great as when you put your suit into speed mode you don't actually move that quickly!

Hopefully, someone will have a similar setup to me and can explain what custom configs are, how to use them and give me a set of values that they use on similar hardware. But if not, can someone please point me in the direction of the information that is spoiler free please?

Many thanks, in advance, for your help :)

I'd be interested to know this as well as I am also late to this party!

I have played first bit and the only thing I have turned down so far is the motion blur and the shadows I think.

Similar setup to above, [email protected] with 2gb and a 8800GTS 640MB running Vista32.

the speed you move at ingame has nothing to do with your framerate!

You don't *really* need custom configs. Just turn one or two settings down to medium. But if you search custom configs in google you should be able to find ones that suit you.

I didnt want to start my own thread for this and it is a bit of a hijack but is there any mods/hacks for the combat system?

I am used to more realistic combat, COD1, 2, 4, BF2 etc. Crysis combat just seems wrong.

I can sneak up on someone and one shot them in the head, but once alerted to my presence it can take an entire clip at point blank range to kill them. Only the shotgun seems to be effective, and only at close range!

Well here's my custom config. You need to create a file called autoexec.cfg and place it to Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis. Copy and paste the text below to it with notepad. Change the resolution with r_height and r_width commands and set all high in options.

This is what i'm holding out for as well. I don't want it easy just I feel it'd be more fun with more vulnerable enemies. As it is I don't feel like a super soldier and feel forced into a lot more stealthing than I enjoy.

OP, I too have just installed Crysis and my PC config is very like yours. I tried running with all options on high at 1900x1200 but I was too optimistic. I agree with SebC regarding custom configs. Dropping the res to 1600x1050 with 2x anti-aliasing (everything still on high) gives satisfactory results for me.

custom configs generally make the game run slower than standard settings, don't forget that

Not sure about that... I definitely gained performance over "High" using a custom config that also made the game look better in general. Yes somethings are getting disables to allow for higher frame rates. But sacrificing less obvious effects and settings in preference to allowing more obvious improvements made for a better looking and performing game overall.

Im not sure its been linked to but the two configs I have found best are This ones more suited towards DX9 and Geforce 7 series cards I guess
And this more suited towards 8 series

Remember and go in and adjust the system properties, memory, video memory and sli as required.

Also the built in benchmarks are not really a good indicator for performance towards the end of the game...

it all depends what you do with your config, if its an eye candy config, chances are you'll see a drop in performance, you can make one to improve performance with little visual impact though

That's the whole point for me. I cant run it at full so have no need to make things look better. And framerate isn't great at the best of times. The configs I use keep the game looking sharp but increase the performance a little.

you've got an 8800GTX though, surely you getting decent frame rate anyways?
