I would use anything other then good brand psu for about £50.

What about cases like the Antec Sonata II, that comes with a 480w "smart power" PSU and at only £60, surely that PSU is pretty good? - thinking of getting for a cheap build PC (but would later want to upgrade it).

go antec sonata! :P im not sure id trust my components with £25 for case + psu, if you like the actual case just get a decent psu for it. personaly id spend a bit more and invest in a pc-7 and and a decent psu as a case will last you years, looking back thats what i should have done, but i had a realy tight budget :)

now then fellaz, i aint gonna pretend i know whats what, coz i dont, im pretty new to this 'pc modding' lark, & what id like to know is........what is the issue with what psu im using? why is it so important?

well i wouldnt spend less than £40 for a psu for any half decent system, cheap psu's thta you get with cases tend to be really under powered, really cheaply put together and really unreliable, is it worth risking frying your whole system?

Say you bought a £500-1000 sterio system. Would you go plug it into a dodgey plug socket.

Best way i can describe it :o

A decent psu would protect everything its connected to, a chepo one would just blow up and take your whole pc with it :o

I love my Sonata II. The PSU is completely silent and hasn't caused me any problems. :D

Dodgy PSU could = kaboom! bye bye pooter.

If you want a good illustration of why not to base your system around an el-cheapo already in the case power supply, just read the 3 pages in this article devoted to the Apevia 500w psu (it's actually one of their retail units so if anything it should be more reliable  ).

Just as a taster let me present a couple of quotes:

"It should be noted that I stopped testing on the first Apevia unit we had after Test #3 because the unit began to melt."

"the second unit we received also began to melt during Test #3"

If that doesn't strike fear into you, I don't know what will :D

its like buying a house with 1950's wiring and expecting it to support all the mod cons, flickering lights, fuses going, sparks etc. but in a PSU that's unstable components (pc crashing), components dying due to surges (waste of money) and fireworks if you're unlucky :D

tbh with his system i cant see it making much difference.

I ran my old system off some cheapo psu and it did fine, im talking AMD 1700+. Then I had a AMD 3000 running on a £30 550w Colours-it psu, who the hell are colours-it?

If he had newer stuff and was overclocking then yes, get a well known good brand.

Although some unbranded stuff is probably pretty much the same anyway, these days its all made in China or Taiwan.
