Ive just discovered FFDSHOW

Yeah its pretty good alright, just don't overdo the processing because it can end up worse, this guide gives good results.

Im having trouble getting it to work with my windvd 5 codecs, anyone know if they're incompatible or something?

I use it on TheaterTek 2 and works a charm. I used that guide, but recieved better results using the 3rd from pottom S... something, much better. the FFDShow version is well out of date on that guide also.

Different versions of ffdshow may work, it's purely trial and error - the only guaranteed way to use it is with theatertek but even then some versions don't agree with it.

I get nothing (i took this whilst a DVD was playing, but it comes up black on a screen shot, im guessing its a piracy protection thing)

Edit: Right, it works when i play downloaded things (Legal Tv episodes and stuff) in WMP but when i play the West Wing DVD in both WMP and Theatre Tek i get nothing, any idea's?

I use zoomplayer with windvd 5 codecs and have tried ffdshow with other codecs before like nvidia purevideo, dscaler 5 and windvd 7, they all work ok but the trouble is i can only use windvd 5 as the rest are trials and dscalar is still in alpha or beta so prefer not to use that.

wild58 you missed a step in setting it up:

In the configuration screen highlight codecs on the top left

on the screen that shows go to the bottom where it sats 'raw video'

change it to 'all supported'

should now work with dvd as well

Yes, assuming your screen is big enough to show it - ffdshow isn't going to do much on a 19 inch screen but when you're on 32"+ DVD shows its flaws.

The main thing ffdshow will do is to scale the video to the resolution of your choice, normally your graphics card would do this but ffdshow does it a lot better.
