I've just discovered Rise of Nations, anything more modern?

I'm enjoying a bit of Rise of Nations Extended Edition that I get as part of the Microsoft subscription service. It's pretty fun and I think I will be playing it a while to try out winning during different ages and with different civilisations.

However I was wondering if there was a more recent, similar game that might expend on the formula with greater tactics and policy decisions to make. E.G I can choose between democracy or Socialism at one point but it doesn't change the game as radically as I thought it would.

Are there any similar games or there?

Not really, at least not RTS. You could give Civilization (5 or 6) a try, it's turn-based but it has those kind of decisions. Or if you want something even more involved then look into Paradox Games' titles, like Europa Universalis etc.

I found that RON bridged the gap between Age of Empires and Civ games. I almost think that RON is what Civ may have been if it was realtime, or to an extent anyway.

As for games that are similar I cannot think of any really. You either sway more to turn based or to stay with realtime.
