Not sure why there is so much excitement for something that is only 5% faster

Because its pointless buying a SandyBridge chip now if IvyBridge offers slightly better performance with a lower power draw at a similar price point.

If however its much more expensive then I'll just pick up a 2500K

Apologies for being a thick noob, but what do you mean by "green ram". Sounds like something I should know about for my next build.

Lots of good deals on Sandybridge at the moment but seems silly to buy now with Ivy so close, plus the Z77 does have some nice features.

+1 for those of us who already own SB K CPU's not really worth it IMO.

Might need to grab a new mobo, might not, but either way the advantages for us are nice.

Thats what I'm hoping. If the 3570k can do 5Ghz on air as easily as the 2500k can do 4.6Ghz then it'd definately be worthwhile.

However, the preview of the replacement for the i7 2700k didn't overclock as well and got quite hot thanks the reduced CPU area (bigger GPU area) - not as much surface area to dissipate the heat.

if the high temps are due to the shrunk main part of the core-under water won't make much difference - it would still get hot

a high end air cooler would get the "heat" away - ie the power output from the CPU - but the implication is the heat is not getting to the heatsink quick enough

wouldn't be any different with water

I think it is a testament to Intel that so many people have waited until Ivy for an upgrade from Core 2 Duo / Quad. Or maybe games just haven't moved as fast as hardware.

Lol what c2d, quad, i'm upgrading from dual p2 xeon or p3 xeon, i can't recall what they are now since had 'em 12 years now.

Skipped the 1st generation and 2nd and 3rd times a charm I guess.
