Hey I'm looking to upgrade in the new few months, but I don't know weather to bite the bullet and buy a sandy bridge cpu now or wait for Ivy. What do you think will offer best performance? The other option could be to splash out on sandybridge-e cpu?

Let me know your thoughts
Cheers

If you don't need to upgrade now then the best thing to do is wait. IB will without a doubt offer improved performance over SB, and its release may well bring the prices of SB down should you decide IB is too expensive a prospect.

I just bought a 2500k. I would've preferred to wait until IB is out, however I wanted to upgrade now as it suits me best.

In a poll, most people voted that they're so happy with their 2500k, they felt they would not need to change, and so wouldn't. That should be good enough to give you the go ahead on SB.

In a poll for existing SB owners, which has limited relevance to someone who is looking to upgrade from a non SB platform really...

All that that poll shows is that people who have SB generally don't feel the need to blow another pile of cash on a chip that will give them limited performance gains over their current platform. If you don't own a sandybridge already you don't belong in the poll ;)

Bottom line is if you can wait for the ivybridge release it would be the smart thing to do. Then armed with the relevant information, ie price point, performance etc of both the IB and SB chips you can then make the appropriate decision.

You say yourself you are looking to upgrade in "the next few months" so you may as well fight the urge to splurge and see how the market looks at the end of the "next few months".

I believe that Ivy Bridge is due to be launched at CeBIT next week, so if you don't need to upgrade today then it's definitely worth waiting. Even if you decide to buy a Sandy Bridge processor, the price on them will drop once Ivy is available (maybe not on day one, but certainly very soon).

IB will definitely outperform SB, but until IB is released we won't know for sure how much difference it makes for different usage patterns.

Isn't that latest delay just for systems with the new chips in?

This quote seems to state that they'll be shipping new processors on schedule.

Yes, as far as I can tell, it is only the Mobile processors that have been delayed.

The desktop chips release is still on schedule.

This is very misleading, but everything I have seen elsewhere just hints to the delay of the mobile chip.
