As title, anyone care to advise which one is better, iWorks or MS Office 11?

Cheers guys.

Wrong place. Can a MOD move this to software thread please? Cheers.

If you need Office compatibility, you might as well spend the extra money for Office. Pages doesn't even deal with .doc(x) files itself (it forces you to convert to Pages and export).

However, if you are simply creating documents and you can use PDFs to share, I personally prefer Pages (and use it exclusively).

Me too...

If you desperately need the compatibility then go for office otherwise iWorks wins hands down. On a separate note... I really wish they would update it, whilst it does everything I need and a bit more I want them to produce things I didn't even know I need! (apple style :p ).

Edit... Either way... get a trial of both and see how you get on!

^^ No you're not.

Office 11 is superior to iWorks in every way imo. iWorks has been fairly neglected considering it's still basically iWorks '09 suite.

As for which one is 'better' then that's Office 2011 by far, no contest.

Apples offerings are generally fine And may well suit you but are not in the same league as Office if you are serious about yer docs and spreadsheets.

I use both (got office cheap via home use programme).

I'd say they are both very capable productivity suites, which one is better is pretty subjective. I will confess I tend to use Office more, but that simply because the interface is more familiar, as someone who only recently (just over a year ago) bought a mac, and I use Office on the Windows PC. But when I do use iWork it's nice to work with and has some good features.

If I didn't already have Office on the Mac, and would have to pay full price for it, I'd certainly go for iWork as a home user. I'd only consider Office if I really needed compatibility or some functionality for work.

Worth quoting this as it sums it all up really. Office is leaps and bounds ahead of anything that Apple offers, but you get what you pay for (feature-wise). iWork is far cheaper and simpler, and is probably going to be easier to use for most because of its smaller feature-set. Pages is likely to be more than enough for most users, if we exclude Office compatibility.

If you need to handle big spreadsheets, you are better off doing it in a VM. Excel on OS X is noticeably slower and buggier than the Windows version.

Thanks guys. I really need the software to be totally compatible with office 2010 for work reasons. I do a lot of PP and excel work for presentations. I've now decided going for the bootcamp thing as iv'e got a retail copy of W7. I think I could get a cheaper office through my son's uni address. (hopefully)

Now off to do research on this bootcamp thing.

Ps. been a windows man all my life. just got carried away by all these MB hype. love the quality of the hardware though specially the gestures on the trackpad and starting to like the complexity of the MAC OS too.

You can get both Office for Mac and Windows cheaper via the educational store. It's how I got my copy as I'm currently doing my MSc. If I remember correctly the Mac version was less than the Windows one.

office is better that iworks but really for an extra 30 odd quid I think its worth getting just for the icloud support for ipad/iphones. There is rumors of an iworks 12, as they released and ilife 11.

The iPad iLife suite can export into Office compatible files so I use Pages/Numbers on the iPad and I save in Word/Excel format so I can continue working when at home.
