I'm looking to build a light IM server. I'm thinking Jabba server, possibly running off CF (I might be dreaming here - if all else fails, HDD!).

Last time I used this was with Openfire and the Spark IM client. I don't know exactly where the issue was but it would occasionally not deliver messages. I'm kinda hoping these issues have long been ironed out.

Looking for any other suggestions though, especially if you've used another server with no issues.

I've been using Openfire - mainly because it's easier for other people to administer via a web interface. Especially those that aren't so tech savvy.

Works fine. No problems at all, it even automatically adds other users to everyones address book.

You don't need to use Spark though. Any Jabber/XMPP client will work such as Pidgin.

Cool. I'm hoping my bad experience was a one off :D

Why do people run their own IM servers? Honest question, I am sure there is a good reason I am missing.

When the internets are controlled by a third party and where people are currently using their personal mobiles to get messages to other parts of the building. There is also no email and some of the buildings have no handsets.

In this instance, internal IM = pure win.
