Here is the clip of Jack Thompson on Fox News this morning, explaining how the Northern Illinois University shooting was the result of violent video games. My favorite bit is right at the beginning.
"Jack, welcome on this tragic day." "Yeah, I wish I weren't here." "You know? Us too."
We wish you weren't there either Jackie boy, but there you are anyway, immediately hijacking the interview for your own purposes. The interviewer starts by asking what the shooter's age (27) tells us about him, seeing as he is more of an adult than the usual late teens that perform these sorts of crime. Jack's answer? "If you get started playing - for example - violent video games you can uh...you are more likely to copycat the behaviors in the games."
It's like he doesn't even hear the question the guy is asking. The question merely served to pull the string on JT's back to ready the anti-gaming rhetoric. It's classic Thompson every step of the way. "You can rehearse these type of massacres on simulators which are called video games and you can...therefor made more proficient in doing this." He explains that "Counter-Strike Half-Life" was that Cho, the perpetrator of the Virginia Tech Massacre trained on in High School, suggesting that the behavoir of the NIU shooter had the same sort of training. He also cites the shooter's attire...all black...was also similiar to what the hero in Counter-Strike wears. He certainly couldn't have gotten the idea to wear all black from anywhere else, could he? What kind of bad guy wears all black, other than a good 50% of them throughout the history of fiction?

Then Jack loses his train of thought for a moment, the gnomes inside his head desperately trying to recover any for of cohesive thought tossing a plug for one of his books out and...did he just suggest that he predicted exactly how the shooting occurred? Why yes - yes he did.

To his credit, the Fox News anchor seems to realize how full of **** JT is and ended the interview with a dismissive, "Well clearly you connect this to games, and we'll find out more about the suspect Steven Kazmierczak.." only to have Jack speak over him with a smug, "Well we'll see...we'll see."

So far what we know of Kazmierczak counteracts the profile of previous school shooters. He was a well-adjusted, well liked student who received honors in classes and was in the chess club while growing up. He owned a gun permit, purchased his handguns legally, and only really began to show any signs of trouble a few weeks before the shootings when he stopped taking medication for an undisclosed condition.

Will Jack wind up with mud on his face once more? Is there any more room for mud? Why the hell do major news agencies still contact him when this sort of thing happens? The world is full of crazy people. Some shoot up schools. Others blame that on violent games without proof.

Thanks to Andy for pointing us towards the clip.

I find this really unbeleivable. Not only is this school massacre really tragic, but it doesn't show any of the 'typical' similarities between the usual school massacres in the US. (can't believe I just said that - the USUAL school massacre's in the US... there's something seriously wrong there!!!). Anyway - it seems like this guy will jump onto absolutely any story to plug his cause.

I know we have debated this topic many times before - but it's healthy to have a vent for your frustration, so let it rip ;)

I'm of the opinion that in fact JT was whacked by an angry gamer years ago and has been replaced with a puppet that has canned Jack Thompson phrases it can reel out every time one of these shooting happens.

I agree with him...

Seriously though, the kid played CS in high school and that made him want to shoot people in college. If ALL the people who ever played CS shot lots of people, there wouldn't be many left to shoot.

I personally trained on Mario, look out for when my head stomping rampage hits the news.

Omg you're going to start shooting fireballs at everyone and eating them with your dinosaur .

I think that any publicity for Jack Thompson is a bad thing, and these sort of sites should just ignore him. He's like the Westboro Baptist Church, the more you say how bad they are, they just say thanks for bringing the worlds attention to them.

What gets me is that he did that News interview the same day as the shooting and already he says it was down to CounterStrike!!! He has more background knowledge on the incident than the police do as no doubt they haven't even had chance to clear away the mess before investigating possible causes.

The guys just a ******* ****!!!!

I agree with him in some aspects... If the "person" has a mental problem already and they start playing these video games, like css or whatever he's going to link it to the real world but a normal stable person wouldnt do that. What Jack always seems to say is that because the kid played videos games, he will kill people no matter what his actual state of mind is like. It makes me angry though :p

Pathetic, i beleive in free speach but if it is imposing on other peoples life choices then their will be moral implications and people will fight back. lock him in a room with an xbox and call of duty 4, then lets hear his opinion :D

I played Lemmings as a kid.

Pray you don't get caught up in my massacre... I'm going to make you all stand still with your arms outstretched, then one by one I'll blow you up.

PS MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Strange how it always seems to be in the USA. I don't recall hearing about any high school massacre's anywhere else in the world. Or have I missed something?

Over here the Dunblane massacre springs to mind (can't think of anything more recent), or IIRC Russia has had a fair few.

I'm talking more about the 'students/former students returning to school to shoot it up' style massacres. Dunblane was a disgruntled former scout leader who targetted small children. The one I recall in Russia was more school children being taken hostage by militants and then the military storming in and people being killed in the crossfire.

I do think it is down to the availablity of guns though and the more gun crime rises over here the more I worry something similar could happen.

My god that was shocking... three things I didn't realise.

1, There were so many.
2, There were a lot in other countries to the USA although without actually adding them up the US still seems to have about a 2:1 ratio to the rest of the world
3, They go back much further than you realise. Although there seem to be marginally more in modern times, there were still plenty in the seventies and eighties etc which you could hardly attribute to video games. Unless pong or pacman are enough influence!!!
