Due to the time of year and the fact I want to continue running and cycling through the Scottish Autumn/Winter, I have been looking to get a waterproof jacket which I can use when the weather will inevitably turn bad.

Must have following:

1. Waterproof
2. Breathable
3. Drop Tail (for cycling)
4. Lightweight
5. Reflective so it can be used on roads. Doesn't need to be totally "hi-viz" yellow as long as it has some good reflective sections in good places.

Not so vital (but nice) would be easy packable so that I can take it with me without wearing it.

Trying to find one with these items is proving difficult as most lightweight ones appear to be showerproof and the proper waterproof ones are not very breathable and I don't want to end up like a boil-in-the-bag from wearing one whilst running.... The other difficulty is getting a single jacket that can be used for both disciplines as a lot of the cycling ones are heavy (in comparison to running jackets)

Anyone got some recommendations?

Much obliged :)

I'd be interested in this as well, as I've never found anything that meets these requirements. Maybe a gillet with detachable arms?

Why not get a jacket for each?

Unless your doing both at the same time then I don't see the need for one that will do everything because as you've said cycling jackets are that little bit heavier.

Also as well, they will both be cut slightly differently. Don't think you'd find many running jackets with a drop tail for example.

I cycle and run fairly often. Personally I use an Adidas Supernova jacket I picked up from TK Maxx two years ago. Works well for both, it's windproof and holds up ok in light / medium showers. It does dry very quickly too as well which helps if it's been heavy rain.

That said though I am looking into getting a cycling specific jacket as well as the fit will be better and for commuting in winter I'm looking for something that is waterproof, which I would sacrifice the weight for.

However, when running I don't mind getting soaked as I usually have a shower straight afterwards and find it quite invigourating running in the rain with not much on. :p Can usually find me running in just my shorts, running top and windproof even in winter.

I actually quite like the look of that Altura one.

Perhaps I am overly concerned about a waterproof running jacket as, TBH, I would be sweating anyway. I guess windproof is sufficient given the sub-zero temps up here in Winter but that would mean 2 jackets....

I didn't mention budget so I wasn't restricting the options totally.

I guess I was trying to get 1 jacket as a do-it-all just for easiness and cost issues. Maybe there is no such thing as a jacket for both without some sacrifices e.g. weight V waterproof V discipline but I thought I would ask just in case there is.... I thought there might be for things like Triathlons etc

Thats just it mate, if it's one jacket for both then you will have to make a compromise. As although they are both very active sports, the fitting of the jacket and the elements you'd rather it being able to withstand are different.

In terms of triathlon you would find most of these to be in spring / summer / autumn and therefore not really any need for waterproof / windproof jackets in this case.

Plus it's generally a wetsuit for the swimming and a tri suit for the cycling and running. With the tri suit being quick drying. Jacket would just add more times onto your transition. A triathlon is something I've looked into before but it's not for me at the moment. Too busy focusing on my cycling (MTB / Road) and running (road / trail) at the moment to add another discipline into the mix.

Personally I'd get the two, plus the running jacket can always be used for cycling as well when the weather isn't too bad to be fair as well.

Cheers for the help, much appreciated.

I think I will probably start off with the Altura Evo one that you linked to and see how it fairs as a running jacket as well then make a decision for something else if needed. It's waterproof and highly reflective which I will need as I run on and next to roads. Might leave the hi-viz yellow off though and go for the more conservative black one :D

Thanks again

Another thing to point out as well that is EvansCycles will price match with most other cycling websites. There's a list on there website which ones they will do it with.

I'm pretty sure I've seen the jacket for £50 elsewhere (may be Merlin Cycles) and it means you can try it on as well.

Glad I could help. :)

I use a Montaine featherlight smock to ride in, but I don't tend to run in waterproofs because I sweat a lot. Even breathable stuff just gets me soaking wet.

I just got this...

Mavic 2011 Notch H2O Jacket Winter 2011 for £77.

However, it hasn't rained since I bought it = D Feels fine on me though!

I've got a Marmot Hyper jacket in bright blue for when I go mountain biking, its very light weight, waterproof and is made of a kind of stretchy material so its good for when you're moving around.

I use a Montane Featherlite Velo. Breathable it is not, and I'd barely even classify it as water resistant let alone a waterproof. I treat it as a (very) lightweight hi-vis windproof.

I didn't mean that, I was just identifying that my Velo - though advertised as breathable and waterproof - was neither of those things. Your smock might be fantastic!

After much looking around I think I may have found the ideal jacket. The reason for the update is because someone else asked me to let them know if I found a jacket that is suitable for running and cycling/MTB'ing.

OMM Kamleika Race Jacket

It is designed for running but incorporates a drop tail for cycling and reflective areas for visibility

Review 1 - This is for the smock version so is similar to jacket

Review 2 - Again, smock version but review stands.
