Seen one local going for £600. 2.1 V6 (thought they were 2.0s but oh well)
Red, decent spec, 130k mileage, they any good or steer well clear?

just for work runs and the odd motorway run so will be a town car mainly. See they share many components with Mondeo's but I'd rather be in a Jag than a mondeo personally.

Are they reliable? cheap enough when things go wrong?

Cheers,

I hated the things to drive when they were new, will be even worse now.

However, at £600 I can't really see what there is to complain about so long as the thing lasts until next MOT.

If you check the usual basics and it goes in and out of all gears ok (assume it's an auto) there isn't masses to worry about as you're unlikely to bother with niggling issues anyway

Definitely get manual as the auto are meant to be problematic on the X type. I've considered getting the 230bhp 3.0 AWD version I've seen them for around 1.3k private. A lot of performance for the money.
Op you can get 1k examples with about 70k on which might be a better choice than what your considering for £600.

I'm not too fussed about power, it's comfort and cheap/reliable motoring I'm considering. Did consider a Honda crv but the 4wd system is a bit off putting in case it goes tats up. Is there much to go wrong on them? The 2 litre would do me just fine, as long as they aren't prone to electrical failures or catastrophic expensive bills. They look decent enough.

Yes the 2.0 will be more than enough for what you are after. What I was saying is if you up your budget to £900-1k you can get a far more lower mileage example with under 80k miles which will be less worn out in terms of clutch and gearbox etc. When I've done a quick research on them in the past they do seem fairly basic reliable cars. Shouldn't cost you anymore than a Mondeo for basic items.

They are good reliable run around and tbh you can buy them for £600 all day long so you're never going to have a bill larger than that.

I have one which i bought for the screwball rally over a year ago and i have kept it because i need a car with 5 seats every now and then and i really don't care what happens to it. I think the only reason its still around is because its quite comfortable with heated leather seats and good AC so it has been great for the odd trip up and down the country. it's up to 188k now and its going strong.

I have the 3.0 and i would imagine they probably have similar running costs as mine does 22mpg around town and 30 on anything long distance.

in fact you can have mine for £300 if you can live with the DIY satin black paint job :P.

Something that everyone comments on when they drive it is that there is no place to rest your foot next to clutch.

Also i did replace a few suspension parts and iirc they were mondeo bits and very cheap too.

Auto are ok but really need the gearbox oil changing slightly more regular than manufacturer stated intervals. Torque converter also needs to be drained.

Manual boxes are great. Check header tanks for a split tank and thermostat housing. Check when the plugs were last changed because the rear plugs in the V6 are very difficult for poor mechanics to get off and are often neglected by most people or the car has been put into a garage for a service in good faith and the rear plugs have been left due to the time and difficulty.

both very simple fixes and common problems I have seen 1st hand. Dad used to have one.
